Is there a way to get back into the catholic church after being excommunicated?

I just got excommunicated, pope is a nasty ♥♥♥♥♥ anyway, but can I get back in for the money bonus?

Copied from the FAQ guide on IGN :

"Special option: Donate. You can donate money to the Pope and improve
your relationship with all other catholic kingdoms. To do so, bring
up the Religion menu by clicking the Piety icon on Kingdom Treasury
bar, then click the image of the hand with the money bag (cost 1000
piety and lots of gold).

If your kingdom was excommunicated, you can ask the Pope for
forgiveness (same as donate)."

The system is unreliable. You can donate boatloads of cash but there it seems inconsistent whether or not they let you back in. Sometimes they do, sometimes they make you donate more.
