I think Covid is a very solid guess, but I'm also not certain that is the case.
My first playthrough I chose the UK, and the stat it gave on the end screen for "Killed" was 404,280. I just looked up deaths by Covid in the UK in the year 2021 and it is not even remotely close to that. It's not even 100,000 for the entire year.
I think a more likely source for the stats is animals slaughtered, as thematically it would make a lot of sense to draw stats from the meat industry.
I can't find any stats that match up perfectly with those in the end screen for the game, but it is a lot closer and these things do vary a bit depending on the source used.
Part way through I was also wondering if it could be a commentary on governments involvement in the military industrial complex, deaths tangentially related though not directly perpetrated by countries, though that's a stat quite hard to track and the meat industry fits the bill more, so for now that's what I think is the most reasonable presumption.
Ah yes, the dystopian future of 2021
I wish 2021 was still future.
even overlooking the fun ending display, "bloodmouth" is a cute little 'insult' that some vegans like to use, and the one HUD element constantly on the screen is a graphic of your mouth growing ever bloodier as you bite into the sustenance tube obtained from your labours.
I'm gonna start talking a bit more clearly about it, now that the release is behind us!
You seem unreasonably pissed at what I made to take the time to insult me and my work both in reviews and forums.
I'll admit this game did touch me in the sense that it made me rethink having purchased it in the CR bundle instead of giving the money to the homeless
I dont think its covid. I think its quite literally how much animals we kill. Comparing people to animals would have been a very strange comparison.
in the vein of the themes of the game and valuing all life, friendly reminder that people ARE animals :) they are not that different from us, even though we'd like to think otherwise. I don't think consumption of animals/animal products is inherently morally wrong, but i do think a world where we genuinely valued nature and saw our place in it as equals instead of exploitation/domination would result in us eating a tiny fraction of the amount of animals we eat now, like less than 1%.
