Game freezes on Linux
Hey there

After a random amount of time, the game freezes, there is no controls any more and the music continues playing normally. I have to kill the
HyperLightDrifter
and
run.sh
processes manually.

This occurs after minimum 10-20 minutes of normal play, always outside any dungeons. It's pretty annoying, but I can still play the game.

OS: Linux.
HLD: next_update.

I'm having this exact same issue using next_update as well. Rarely it also locks up my entire system to the point that I have to manually shutdown.

I too have seen this bug. It will always occur after some period of time (might get a timer to test it) and as soon as it stops, one core of my CPU is immediately pegged. Will try using terminal to launch for possible crash output as I could not find logs.

Played for about 4 hours straight. Not a single crash.

Things that were different from normal:
1. I launched from the CLI, and the output was very verbose. Saw errors on startup but things ran fine. This also made the Steam overlay fail to apply. (that may be the cause of #2)
2. I used SC Controller to operate my Steam controller since starting from the CLI caused the controller to run in desktop mode if Steam was in control.

This leads me to believe that either the Steam controller isn't playing nice, or the Steam overlay is doing something. I'll try running it directly out of Steam with the overlay disabled next and see if it ever crashes. I won't be able to test which of these issues it may be (if either) since the controller requires the overlay to operate.

Edit: Forgot to ask if either of you were using controllers. If you are, what kind?
Edit: Game crashed with overlay disabled and launching via Steam. This puts me at a loss for what could cause it. Hopefully this info manages to help either way.
Edit: Found a possible cause. Game crashed while launched via CLI this time. I got huge spams of the following:
OpenAL error: 40961 (SoundHardware::Tick)
followed by this upon freezing:
stopping group74

Hopefully this helps!

The game output is very verbose, many messages have nothing to do with the current bug.

I have spotted that the freeze often occurs some time after the game music vanished (this bug). When this audio bug happen, the logs are full of:

OpenAL error: 40961 (SoundHardware::Tick)

I remind the second message you talked about when the freeze bug happens.

Oh, and I don't use any controller, just good'ol keyboard and mouse. I've had the freeze when starting the game from Steam and from the command line as well.

I haven't checket the status of my CPU during the freeze.

The funny thing is, I noticed no change in the audio at all. Music kept playing, sound effects all worked, and nothing sounded weird. In fact, the music continued after it froze.

I'm using a PS3 controller and I'm using Arch Linux. There's a couple different ways I get this crash:
  1. Graphics/input stops completely but music continues to play, one processor core is at 100% and I can close the game with a SIGKILL.
  2. Music stops but sound effects work and the game continues to run fine. A short while later it locks up like #1.
  3. My entire system locks up, graphics/input/music stop and I need to hold my power button down until my system turns off

Edit: also I'm not sure why but the Steam overlay has never worked for me in this game.

@svanheulen: about the missing Steam overlay, I suppose you run the game properly by Steam?

I have never experienced the case 3. yet.

The problem occurs with next_updute, but does it with the normal version? I'm not sure anymore.

Yeah, I run the game from within Steam. I'm using Arch Linux though so I need to use the "launch options" to point it to the correct version of libcurl.
It never happened to me in the normal version, I think it only affects next_update.
Hey guys did any of your end up finding a work around?
Just got the game and I'm having the same issue. I'm running the latest linux mint and using a keyboard

Sorry dude, no solutions so far. I just deal with it.

Same problem occurs with a 360 controller. The game freezes but the music keeps playing.
Anyone tried running it in wine or a vm?

I gave up on Wine altogether for the most part. Too many bugs/hassle for what you get.

Is this bug fixed ? I can't but this game if it locks up the entire system ( i have had that from simular ports ) . It's a bit odd that the Dev has not responded here since January, doesnt really fill with confidence. It's not like the forum is very busy as it is.

Sadly if it's not fixed il have to skip this title i suppose.

It does not lock the entire system. You can still interact with you desktop environment to open a terminal or switch to another TTY to kill the program.
