Easier way to go through the dash challenge
Hi,

I'm sure everyone knows about the dash challenge, when you have to get 800 dashes in a row to unlock a special outfit. I tried hard to do it and I had understood that it is way above my abilities to time button presses for a long time. So I first decided to use autohotkey to simulate timing.

That attempt was unsuccessful, but accidentally during it I found a way to simplify the challenge immensly. The hardest bit about it (at least for me) is that you have to lead the Drifter around the central wall, at the same time timing button presses perfectly. If you only have to do one thing (either lead the Drifter or press the dash button) then it becomes much easier.

So it is actually possible to avoid going around in circles. What you have to do is, first, enable keyboard+mouse controls (it won't work with the game pad). In this game mouse controls are significanty different from gamepad because there is now a cursor in which direction the Drifter dashes when you press space.

Remember that the purple squares which form two vertical rows restore your stamina when you pass over them. Put the player character beside one of these rows. Then point your mouse cursor over the center of the row directly perpendicular from the player character. That's all, you can now leave the mouse alone and concentrate on timing presses!

This works because the Drifter always dashes in the direction of the mouse cursor. When you start dashing in the position described above, you will dash over the mouse cursor, so when you dash again, you will be dashing in the exactly opposite direction. So you will be actually dashing back and forth. Because you do this over the row of purple squares, your stamina won't ever run out.

This helped me to get to the required 800 dashes on the first try, although even this was pretty hard for me. Maybe it will help someone too.

Not bad. Honestly I think they should lower the amount of dashes to 300 because it's way too hard and depends greatly on the hardware you're using.

It's just not fair if your computer can't keep up with the inputs. I only managed to go up to 160 after hours of trying.
:(

Also, it seems that the input system is not very reliable. There's some sort of lag that adds up over time, and the key / button presses get out of sync very fast. Something to do with the GameMaker engine perhaps?

Just tested that theory with a macro, let the counter climb to 1200 and figured that was enough. After the initial 10 dashes, the timing stays consistent. (At least within .05 seconds.)

I would say software or hardware issue on user end, laggy input, or even the buttons themselves not being consistent, or are maybe worn out?

I use a Razer Sabertooth controller. Unlike the microsoft 360, my A,B,X,Y buttons are not pressure resistant. They *click* instantly like mouse buttons. (there is no depth to the downstroke. Its on / off within like half a milimeter, maybe try? they are a little pricey though, but you have 6 additional buttons that can be bound as any of the original buttons)

With keyboard + mouse, assign DASH to left/right click on the mouse.

Space bar is the best to dash... Just put the cursor on purple pad and you're good to go.

i tried it for like half an hour and couldnt get past 120, then came back later, a bit drunk, and startred timing it to an 8-count and found that way easier for some reason. Being slightly drunk probably also helped to relax my hand and just space out while tapping non stop for like 2 minutess.

Woah, tremendously helpful. My biggest trouble was the mouse aim around the stage, would easily hit the corner and ruin the attempt. Managed to get a nice 888 after reading this, thanks!

I found easier to not look to the screen while doing because you can still get distracted with the numbers and movement. Focused only on the soft pressing and it worked like a charm. Could've probably done more, but I knew 800 was enough.

Anyone who owns a logitech programmable mouse/keyboard, but also finds this a bit tedious is welcome to a script I wrote for a friend:

The character does perfect dashes in a rectangle around the arena while you go get a drink. Stop him when you are content with the astronomical number. Or dont.

This was really helpful, but i still had a lot of trouble, so this is what i did-
Set dash to slash, turn off music, and close your eyes. the dash sound effect is a good indicator for frequency.
EDIT: Also, it begins to sound like a steam train after a while.

It's so easy to do it with macros.

I just pressed space and went to do something else. Came back with 950 dashes.

Well, ♥♥♥♥.

It seems that they fixed that exploit. Now if you don't move the mouse the "stamina bar" that's at the left top corner will drain before you reach 15 dashes...:steamsad:

EDIT: Oh, nevermind. Figured out the purpose of the buttons on the floor. Sorry for my ignorance :/

Is the dash challenge essential to beating the game, or do you just get something cosmetic?

Just for cosmetics, but with a really useful effect

Good to know. I have better things than 800 dashes in a row to do! LOL
