The graphics..
Why? So much coolness in story and sound yet hindered by a blatant disregard for visualization. Maybe if the game started in it's current style, then slowly progressed visually into something along the lines of Brothers: Tale of Two Sons or Bastion. A game where the world becomes more clear as you play. This would have been the perfect game to try the concept. Oh well, it's a start.

It's not for everyone, but I totally prefer the current graphics. I'm a huge fan of games with graphics like this such as Kingdoms, Chasm, etc. I actually dislike the graphics of bastion a lot but that's just me.

[edit] Also Titan Souls, Rain World, and Death's Gambit. To me, pixelated games such as minecraft seem to look weird when they're high-bit yet pixelated.

Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder is a trope I guess :), but I think many of us think this is the most gorgeous of pixelized games on Steam.

Though I feel like it comes across better in gameplay movies that show off its hand-crafted animations, than in static screenshots.

Roughly 75% of the game can be accessed from the beginning. Unless it was simply a shoddy change of resolution, this would be rendering most of the same world and sprites 2-3 times over.

Given the narrative of the game, I'd also argue it'd make more sense for the game's visual quality to get worse the further one progresses.

That would be cool also, would seem to fit. I don't think it's ever been done in a game. I would think, to implement it, the players actions would cause the degredation. Something of a virus or some sort in which the synopsis is to "recompile" the universe to it's original state of bits and bytes before a "reset" begins. A.k.a "Crunch Theory". Sort of
The game is pixel porn art. I don't see what you mean about the graphics in general. If you don't like pixel art, that would explain it. But to say this is bad pixel art is another thing. It's one of the best pixel based games created based on the looks. Plus it complements the sound design a lot.
