High refresh monitor problem
I have a 165hz monitor, the game runs at 30fps. It feels extremely slow to react to my button presses, like I'm moving through glue. I'm not getting framerate dips, it's just sluggish to the point of unplayability.

I had fps drop after one patch, that used borderless max window mode as default setting and the game ran in slow-mo, since it was not in focus. If that is not the case, well you can't do much really...

Try to set 150hz synced fullscreen for even frames, although the difference at such polar extremes will be negligible.

If you have isolated the case on that, then the game just probably doesnt support such high refresh rates, sadly the only solution is to just reduce it manually till they fix it, or just get a refund.

Considering the devs tried to go for 480p feel and 30fps for these "artistic reasons"... i wouldnt keep my hopes up that they actually try optimizing this game for such high refresh rates.

Who knows, maybe next year...

Are you sure the game actually has a problem with higher refresh rates or is it just that you're so used to running games at over 100 fps that the 30 fps is super jarring?

The latter. 30fps is not an acceptable framerate for a pixelart game in 2016 :( I'm not being picky, it's completely unplayable for me. Instant headaches and feels like trudging through molasses.

That either sounds like a bug or like a gross exaggeration over the low framerate and if it's the latter and you can't handle 30 fps, that's fine, refund it.

My instamigraine whenever the world moves suggests it's an issue

Seriously, 30 fps is never acceptable, especially not in a twitch reflex game. The input lag will always be a problem.

It suggests it's an issue for YOU and that's unfortunate. There are plenty of PC FPS games that give me a headache and nausea even running at over 100fps, but I don't use blanket statements saying that FPS games are an issue.

it is acceptable as far more people are enjoying it than there are not. there is no inherent "input lag" from the game being 30 fps. that just isn't how still frame works and each still frame interval, even at 24 fps, is not the cause of perceived delays. if people cannot bother to learn manual control of their displays to handle different types of content then they should either not own such a display or at the very least, avoid taking the easy way out and blaming "30 fps" or other characteristics because the rest of the uninformed parties collectively believe they know what's happening. the only real complaint one could make for legitimate drawbacks of steady framerates is motion sickness or other disorientation. the problem even with this complaint is that it is triggered by high framerates as much as it is by lower framerates depending on the person and display device.

even the best case of human reaction time to a single visual occurrence allows for 3 still frames to have taken place in the same amount of time. in terms of reflex and gameplay, 30 fps does not mean "lag" of any sort. it takes a high frame time, buffer, or poorly timed display for such "lag" to manifest.

the game is not obligated to run at any framerate other than what the creator decides is appropriate and/or works best for the project. simply avoid the game if you do not find it to your liking but don't fool yourself into believing that it is "never unaccpetable". the positive reception of the game proves that 30fps was quite easily and readily accepted and that you speak for far fewer people than you imagine.

Oh I'm sorry that this isn't a 120 fps PIXEL ART game. I have not had ANY input lag. Not even on my bad laptop. It might be because your controller/keyboard is either a) not working well b) running out of battery. Also if you need to complain like this, why don't you make a better game. I'm probably guessing you don't have the talent to.

Calm down, there's a possibility the problem results from the monitor and not from low batterys or something...

I'm the original poster here, I didn't use the word lag. I said it felt sluggish, which is partly due to the purposefully slow animations with a heavy emphasis on animation priority and lack of animation cancel, and partly due to the huge nosedive from gaming at 165fps to gaming at 30fps on the same setup. Unfortunately, the presentation gives me a crunching headache the second the world pans in any direction.

I initially tried playing it over Steam link with a steam controller and assumed the sluggish feel of the controls was down to the streaming, though it's not usually a huge issue, I can handle small amounts of input lag (e.g. I've played the entirety of Dark Souls 3 using the same hardware configuration without issue). But the sluggish feeling remained when I moved onto my local machine and is present whether I play with a Steam controller, Xbox controller or keyboard.

Also, the idea that someone has to be talented enough in a specific medium to create something better than the product they have a consumer complaint with is idiotic at best. I suppose if I received a cracked egg in my shopping, I have to be able to lay perfect eggs myself before I'm allowed to be annoyed?

No ♥♥♥♥. Though it would be easier if the devs didn't keep changing invincibility frames and whatnot between every session.

I think it's just a combination of heavy animation priority and 30fps making the game feel incredibly sluggish. All of the trailers and prerelease material made it look like a sharp twitchy top-down brawler in the vein of Hotline Miami by way of Zelda. Hotline Miami, same engine, is fine on my system. Feels great.
