Cave Screen?
SPOILER ALERTS (PROBABLY?):

I haven't played the game in a while since I've already beaten it (mostly- I've beaten all the bosses and finished the game, not 100% though) and I come back to find that my save account had a clickable image to the right of itself. I clicked the image, which seemed to act as an alternate save or something, and it brought me to a screen in the game where my Drifter is dead (or unconscious, but it looks more like a corpse to me) and slumped against the fanged statue of the dog, with his little robot lying broken beside him. I would assume that this screen represents the aftermath of the cave-in (after the Drifter defeats the final boss), but it just feels like I'm missing something. There is a blinking energy bar in the top left corner, which makes me feel like I'm supposed to be doing something since at least that gauge is functioning. You can even open up the map/gear, and it shows that you are in the area underground near where the final boss room is located.

It's most likely just an aesthetic screen that serves no functional purpose, but I would still like an explanation as to why it's here. It's very pretty.

Wow, I've never noticed that. How long has that been there? The image shows up to the right of my NG+ save, and the scene it leads to is indeed of the Drifter's skeleton in the place where they died after defeating the final boss.

I'm not seeing any UI elements and the map doesn't work either. All I can do is quit to the main menu.

It's really kind of depressing.

Indeed it is... Maybe it's just a little commemoration screen, for when the Drifter has finished his quest. Kind of a sad ending for the Drifter... It would be really interesting if, in the future, the Drifter would not be dead and would simply have been unconscious, and the player could wake him and begin a new quest or something. Or if the screen or the effects of the screen were different for a Drifter who has completed the game to its fullest extent (all modules, monoliths, etc).

But as it is, it's just a pretty image. Sad but pretty.

It's what truly happened to the Drifter after saving the world from Judgement and its spreading affliction. Yes, it's depressing. But at least the Anubis creature gave the Drifter the illusion of ending his adventure on the surface, seeing the land he rescued.. :CompHLD:

Yeah, it's been there a while. Depressing indeed, but I love that scene.
