"Single Player" - That means you play solo.
"Multi Player" - That means we can play online against other players [Versus in Steam Language]
"Local Coop" - That means you can play LAN, Splitsreen, and yada yada...
"Coop" - That means we can play online with other players [Online Coop]
Will Dev add Online Coop in the future? I will play that game again, and I want to play with my friends because it's very good.
Multiplayer and Coop do not imply anything about network connectivity : they are generic terms.
There is a specific tag for online multiplayer and online coop : it's just how the tag system works in the steam store.
I have to admit though : there is a good argument for the presence of both terms next to each other to be confusing enough that someone could believe there is something more to the meaning.
It's more an issue about the Steam store organisation.
The hierarchical status of these tags is not shown on the store page.
No, you are wrong. In Steam Store, any game with "Multiplayer" means that game has Versus mode. Any game with "Coop" means that game has ONLINE Coop.
If the game has "Local Coop", obvously means this game has LAN Coop. This is how Steam Store works with the Tag and you can check that out by just searching for "Multiplayer" and check all games that will appear will have Versus mode. Same with "Coop".
PS.: There is repetitive tags, because PLAYERS add those tags. In Valve's Tags, I mean, official tags, "Multiplayer" means Versus and "Coop" means Online Coop.
To prove that, you will find "Multiplayer", "multi-player", "Multi Player", "Multi-Player" all those kind of tags, all the same ♥♥♥♥, all created by Players.
You are inventing your own rules.
Multiplayer is the generic term that covers all types of multiplayer modes.
Coop is a generic term that covers all types of cooperative play.
Just click the multiplayer tag in the game's page and see some of the game sin the list not matching your criterias. Also check the "sort by tags" options to the right of the page and see the specific tag for online multiplayer and online coop.
In case you search for games with "Coop" and find a game that you can't play Online Coop [as HLD] that means Devs will implement that or they wonrgly put the tag there.
In Steam Language, "Multiplayer" or of its variations means Online Versus. As the same as "Coop", or any of it's variations, means Online Coop.
I'm proving that by just searching a game/DLC with those tags. You will see all games with "Multiplayer" are games with Online Versus, as the same with "Coop", all games with Online Coop.
For sure, there are only 4 Official Tags...
"Single Player" - Solo player that doesn't need internet connection to play.
"Multiplayer" - Online Versus that requires internet connection to play.
"Local Coop" - LAN Coop mode, you just need to connect with the LAN party.
"Coop" - Online Coop that requires internet connecton to play.
There's more as "Spliscreen" and yada yada that is included in one of those tags, I mean if you have "Splitscreen" that means you doesn't need internet connection to play. You can include that in Local Coop tag.
Just search for yourself, you will see that =)
It directs to Steam's the search engine.
The tag filter list has 9 entries for defining the number of players, and there are no accompanying descriptions.
Is the English version of Steam different ?
I am curious as to where you found your "only 4 official tags" with descriptions.
Tell me the differences between:
Multiplayer, Local Multiplayer and Online Multiplayer.
As the same as Coop, Local Coop and Online Coop.
Multi-Plataform isn't a game mode.
I don't know what Ecran Partage is, sorry...
Multi-player
Online Multi-Player
Local Multi-Player
Co-op
Online Co-op
Local Co-op
Shared/Split Screen
Cross-Platform Multiplayer
Where's the differences between Multi-player and Online Multi-Player, Multi-player and Local Multi-player... What is that "Multi-player", there's any way to play a multi-player game isntead of Online and Local?
Same as Coop, there's anyway to play Coop without being Online and local?
Shared/Split-Screen isn't a game mode. Also it is Local Coop and/or Local Multiplayer.
Cross-Platform isn't a game mode as well, it's just to say you can play a game with PC / Xbox / PS together, also it could be Coop and/or Multiplayer.
4 Tags doesn't make any sense from 9 Tags.
PS¹.: MULTIPLAYER = VERSUS
PS².: There's only 5 real Tagas as GAME MODE:
Singleplayer,
Local Multiplayer,
Online Multiplayer,
Local Coop,
Online Coop.
OR...
Singleplayer.
Local Multiplayer [Local Versus]
Multiplayer [Online Versus]
Local Coop.
Coop.
Multiplayer does not convey any information regarding the game rules nor the technical requirements : it is an overarching term that contains all the other.
Regarding local vs split/shared screen :
Shared screen usually means the game is played by multiple people on one single machine (there are exceptions, i know at least one : Screen Cheat). It is very common on consoles but it is very rare on PC. I believe Steam added this category recently.
Local multiplayer means the players are in the same place. For PC, it usually means multiple machines connected in a local area network because split/shared screen multiplayer games are so rare on PC, but the term is still technically correct for single machine shared/split screen (the players are in the same place). You could even use it for turn games.
Cross platform implies there are at least 2 machines of different nature (PC+console or PC+phone), but the type of link between the two is not specified, it could be local or online. And just like you said : it does not say anything regarding the game mode, because that is not the point of the tag.
If you want to define the game rules, you need a system that is way more flexible than just versus and coop. Otherwise you'd be really stuck when a game has both (team vs team games), or worse : when the rules change dynamically during the same game (Unreal Tournement 3 Betrayal mode for example).
That's what the user's tags are for.
