He was my first boss and he flattened my ass a bunch of times too. Now that I've beat him (and the other bosses) a few times each, I just know what to do, like with any enemy that has a fixed, predictable attack pattern.
I wouldn't personally recommend baiting him into killing his bodyguards. I tried it when I first fought him because it felt like cutting down on the amount of danger I had to deal with, but once I got him under my belt I kind of find that I can roll over him without worrying about the bodyguards, since they're all standard slow moving samurai guys anyway, which means you can almost always lead him away from them.
dodge his 2 hit combo, then shotgun blast him(middle lower gun on the menu), hit him with a normal combo, charge up a heavy slash, then shotgun again. Rinse and repeat. Each time you hit him, like with all enemies, he freezes for a moment so you have a window to keep attacking.
Or do the pistol combo. fire the pistol and the moment the shot goes out, swing your sword to animation cancel, followed by using your pistol again. If you pull it off right, you can get about 5-6 hits per second in, which shreds enemy HP FAST
Ingredients - Multi-Dash (dash upgrade top), Slash Attack (sword upgrade bottom), Pistol (bigger clip),
(DO NOT be a fool like me and get the Lance Attack (dash upgrade bottom), if you accidentally trigger that (dash+attack instead of attack+dash, all too easy to mistake) you will bounce off of him and land in front of him for his sword to come down right on your head. Oh, those rascally game designers...)
How to do it - When he charges you, CHARGE HIM BACK. The slashing attack (attack+dash) can pass through him and land behind him. Keep at it, these reload your gun. When your stamina hits the red, empty the pistol into him, and you can get enough stuns to stop his last charge of his fighting phase. His shooting phase (crystals, gun) you can just walk around and regen stamina. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Try to use the rolly poly when he is pounding the ground, or heal, assuming you were smart enough to dash away from him.
Sum all this tactics to do him damage, and keep yourself alive.
Suggest you add yourself an extra medkit upgrade, since this tactic I told you is harder to apply the the boss is more damaged and enraged.
He is a real pain and pretty hard, I did retries for like 1 hour.
