Yeah, I'm not sure, but it sounds like he's talking about animation cancelling? Basically, you can fire a gun with no charge time AND melee at the same time, as long as you fire the gun 'first'. The hit still registers, and the sword slash cancels the gun firing animation, so you get the damage from both together. Works with either the pistol or shotgun. I guess swapping out the shotgun and back might reset the cool-down timer on it, but I haven't actually tried that.
