Request: More save points, or save anywhere
Yes yes, git gud.

I don't have much time to spare to game these days, due to pressures of life and work upon my time; and so my opportunities to play games are spread thin and last for short, unpredictable lengths of time. I rather enjoy Hyper Light Drifter, and find the "Normal" difficulty tolerably enjoyable. However, the infrequency of save points leaves much to be desired.

Currently, save points exist at fixed locations and are triggered when you enter the area. This means you can backtrack to the last save point and cross it again to force a save. This allows me to save progress when I'm part way through a series of multiple encounters with adversaries, but it's time consuming and tedious.

Since I'm already able to save my progress mid-way through a series of encounters by backtracking, why not add more automatic save locations or allow us to save whenever there are no adversaries on the screen?

Even tho I can understand your problem, there are plenty of checkpoints, it may sound hard, but the game is about high difficulty and it is your problem, when you can't improve your gameplay, because you obviously have to do RL stuff which priority is higher. There is no reason to make the game even easier.

It is meant to be that hard. It wouldn't be fun when you could save after every 2 enemies.

Take your time and play it through or go play beginners mode, when you have no time to learn the mechanics, but leave normal mode's difficulty alone.^^

I think if your time to play "lasts for short, unpredictable lengths of time", games like this are not exactly the best choice... but you probably already know that too.

As I said, I can already backtrack to the last checkpoint to save at any arbitrary progression time. Adding more save points is not going to make the game any easier than it already is.

All I'm asking is to spend less time backtracking through locations I've already cleared out, for the sole purpose of hitting the last save point.

of course it does make it a lot easier, the savepoint does not save your killed monsters, more savepoints = less monsters to kill after reload :D

It saves your killed monsters.

I tested by killing a monster right after a save point, backtracking across the save, and then seeing that it wasn't there when I reloaded.

Maybe it's because the monster was close to the save? Dunno.

yeah, as long as you not quit the game. when you play it in one session, your argument is valid. but tbh i don't think thats the case here. ^^ Ignore save points and progress already! they are well set and you waste more time travelling back than just retrying your situation. A nice side effect could be, taht you are getting better and the need of savespots starts to decrease. If you don't have time for that -> go play beginners mode.

I don't have the time to spare.

Just add the save points or arbitrary saving; call it "lul yer a casul" mode and remove achievements for all I care.
LeChuck Mar 13, 2017 @ 9:57am
there is a beginners AKA casual mode, why you don't try that out first? What you explained right now already exists in the game! you can't swap back to beginners mode, you need to start a new savegame!

I never tried beginners mode, because i'm just too good in that game,
so i can't exactly say, what changes are made for that, but it must be hella easy! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Because I enjoy a challenge. I just don't have the free time to commit to long sittings. Being able to save at arbitrary locations greatly alleviates this issue, as I can effectively shut it down and come back to where I was at before with nary a moment lost.

Also, this is PC. There was a time when PC gamers spat on the use of console-style save points.

someone is failing at reading comprehension, either that or he REALLY wanted to tell someone that he's a h4rdc0r3 g4m3r and this game is 2ez4him

It's not really an argument of "wotrucasul" but instead that the game is already balanced around a checkpoint system. It saves at pretty much all transitions and none of the areas between those transitions are terribly big -- except for maybe South's above-ground area.

Given all the secret paths I feel as though the areas are designed to be gone through more than once in the intentions you may spot them on your short walk back to where you died.

If your argument is that the areas aren't all that big, which I disagree with but whatevs, then you shouldn't have a problem with adding the ability to save whenever there aren't adversaries present. Doing so wouldn't change too much if, as you say, saving is already somewhat frequent.

exactly.

By the way, to add something useful to the discussion: a save anywhere feature wouldn't make the game easier, look at Dark Souls: those games save non-stop, so much that you can't undo whatever you did by reloading like in other games, but you don't see anyone saying it makes them easier, quite the opposite...
LeChuck Mar 13, 2017 @ 10:15am
Well, in dark souls you need to restart from your bonfire (checkpoint) aswell, when you die. so where is the point of that argument?
