How do I unlock the ability to climb these dirt walls?

I have been working around this for a while now and it is really feeling like i'm missing something obvious. I already have 3/5 bottle caps in area 2 with the tower drill. I have yet to reach the drill.

You need to climb to the top of the castle. Hope that leads ya well

Seek out a place to speak to god and go further from there.
