Linux support has disappeared
Hello, I'll be very brief.
Why has the Linux support icon disappeared?

Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay in answering, but I'm sure you can imagine the chaos we've been through in preparation for this.

I'll be on point - Serious Sam 4 won't be available natively on Linux on launch. What happens later, we don't know. We're currently focused on Windows and if that changes we'll let everyone know.

There are lot of Linux gamers that state all the time that don't care about native as long as it works well under Proton. Many claim that running under Proton is often better with certain games because the Windows version is better maintained.

Yes, they did what many were feared when Proton was announced. They make Linux second class citizen dependant on changes of MS API.

As for Linux gamers paying enough to sustain native Linux ports, you'll have to take that up with developers who routinely make the point that this isn't true in their experience.

Whom in particular? Garry of Rust? He's not even a developer or programmer. He's also a liar, and not the nice Garry we knew back in the day. I'm CS engineer and I know how those things work and how much they cost.

You can also look at most famous Linux port developer. Ryan C. Gordon. Who was working at Loki that created SDL(Linux analogue for DirectX, in case you don't know). Who ported plenty of small and big games to Linux. Not a wrapper ports of Feral, real one. With support of his small Patreon he's offering linux proting for free.

As for Stadia being a gimmick, no. But as PC gamer, sure I get not being that interesting in Stadia and other streaming services. Still an option for a lot of people who don't want to buy gaming hardware.

It's a gimmick. The reason why it's exists is because someone breaking the pot on google's money again. And monthly subscribption for games is a golden dream for corporations. They want to take hardware from you and sell you gaming as cable, water and electricity. Which is very profitable. And very bad for video game fans and developers. You would pay more and developers would become publisher's b*tches for life.

Desktop gaming is only one aspect of software development, there's plenty of other things Linux is used for and much stronger in on server and cloud side like Stadia.

Don't put different things in one basket to try make it look more convincing. ;)

Nice one. Appreciate you mentioning me.

I'm sure Croteam would love to give up the forums, community, and public modding that Steam provides to use Epic exclusive.

There is absolutely no reason to say it's going to be a Epic game exclusive unless this store page gets removed or Croteam/Devolver announces it will be.

I can see Croteam releasing it on both to gain more sales but who cares. Doubt they want to upset the fan base being Epic store exclusive. EVEN if it does become Epic store exclusive I see it coming for sale back on Steam a while later like Borderlands 3 did. If so, just wait and get it then.

Sure is funny they have a link to Steam wishlist and community on their page. :) Platforms also shows Steam. That is more solid than any rumors.

Also note Serious Sam Collection is available on Google Stadia!

Until then it's going to be released on Steam.

OS: TBA
Like I said many times. No epic store exclusive showing yet! Not gonna happen.
I mean, the trailer has Steam's logo at the end of the trailer, not just "PC". So, no. No exclusivity.

Another +1 from me.
I'm definitely interested in this game (hoping it can make up for the disappointing SS3), but I'm not gonna get unless it runs on Linux (or is on a deep sale and runs via Proton).
I'll pay once the linux version is released.

Same here. Was going to preorder it but noticed that SteamOS/Linux icon is missing. If it windows only - who knows if they gonna add the denuvo fail like in Doom Eternal.

Honestly, I think I might know why. Three words. Epic Games Store. Think about it. Croteam refuses to comment on anything regarding SS4 on EGS and coincidentally, EGS doesn't support Mac or Linux. So yeah. It's really saddening to say but I think they are subtly hinting that SS4 is going to be on the Epic Games Store.

This is one of the most stupid things I've ever heard in my life.

Look at which forum we're on. Look at the fact that Steam pre-orders for the game opened up literally yesterday and that the both the standard and Deluxe versions are currently quite high on the Steam top-sellers list.

If they had *any* inclination of doing something like EGS exclusivity, none of the Steam stuff would be happening or even exist at all.

I was trying to help but got all ignored. Got thrown under the floor.

What do you mean, exactly?

In any case, I'm quite sure that they *want* to support Linux, considering their track record with past games, even if they can't make it happen right at launch. Keep in mind Croteam doesn't really have quite the same amount of resources as various other larger studios.

Then that goes for my purchase. What a shame after the support we've seen from you in the past.

Thanks for your answer!

Hope you can get the game later on to our OS. SS Fusion works is a terrific port, I'm really willing to play SS4 on Linux!

Thanks for replying... this is unfortunate given how excellent your Linux support was for prior games.

I can agree with all of this. But with the high reliance of Linux gamers on Proton plus the fact Linux gamers could just use Stadia, the economics of a Linux port start to get very thin. Linux folks can play the game and a lot of Linux folks don't care about native much anymore anyway.

To give you another perspective:

I'm a Linux user that lives in a country where Stadia is not an option. As probably everyone that plays on Linux, I use Proton for some of my games and I can't complain about it. Still, the main issue of buying a game in order to make it run with Proton is that I don't have guarantees that this game will always work in the future, so each purchase I do for playing with proton is a risk that I have to take. In the end is not that I need a game that runs natively but that I really prefer some support/QA guarantee in the purchase I do. So that's what this thread is all about IMO...
