Serious Sam 4 Update 1.08 is Available Now!
Hi Everyone! First of all, happy Serious Sam anniversary. The series we all love and cherish has turned 20 years old this past Sunday, and it really seems unreal. Back when the series started, I was a wee little lad, playing a weird shooter game on my friend’s brother’s PC, not really knowing that one day I was going to be here, writing about an update to the latest release. I’m sure everyone at Croteam has their own story of beginnings, but the most important story is that of support that our fans have shown us over the years. For that, everyone at Croteam will be forever grateful.

Past aside, you all know why you’re here today, and that’s to read about the latest Serious Sam 4 update. The Serious Sam 4 Update 1.08 delivers on some of our promises from the past, much-needed fixes and optimizations, and an amazing roster consisting of 19 brand new playable characters including the entire AAA team, and all notable NPCs, including the almighty Naughty Nonna! Truth is, you want Nonna in your game. You need Nonna in your game. You always did.

The definite star of the show, however, is the latest version of the Serious Editor, followed by the Steam workshop support. Of course, the editor is only available on Steam and is completely free for all owners of the base game. Our veteran community member Asdolg went as far as to create a handy breakdown/guide of some of the major additions in this version of the editor, so make sure to check it out before you start modding.

Sure enough, some mods are already available on the Workshop, so make sure to read our latest update for more info.

Serious Sam 4 – 1.08 (591667) Changelog

What's new:
  • The latest version of the Serious Editor is now available for FREE to all Serious Sam 4 owners on Steam. Get your freak on!
  • We have added the option to enable profanity filtering. Find the "tick" in the Game Options menu.
  • Nonna is back in business and now operates as a playable character. Joining her is the entire AAA team including Hellfire, Jones, Kenny, Mikhail, Quinn, and Rodriguez. And to round it all up, we're actually making all of the NPCs - Anabelle, Aubrey, Brand, Carter, Dmitry, Filbert, Garibaldi, Guard, Michelle, Vermetti, Professor Kiesel, Princess - available as playable characters. If I'm counting correctly (I'm actually just copying a number) that's 19 brand new characters for you to choose from.
  • Damjan added a couple of new tracks. Have a listen. They’re as amazing as ever.
Performance and stability:
  • You guessed it – various performance improvements and optimizations across GFX APIs.
  • Fixed a crash that would happen when trying to change the current loading screen hint, but there aren't any hints to be displayed. I wonder if we did it by adding more hints? Seems like the easiest way to do it.
Gameplay fixes:
  • All enemy spawners in the final boss battle now ignore the enemy multiplier. Because you hated real fun.
  • Netricsa can no longer be invoked while the weapon wheel is active.
  • Fixed a bug where rocket launcher upgrade on Colosseum wasn't properly saved in inventory progress.
  • Fixed a bug where vehicle camera auto-centering wasn't working in multiplayer.
  • The “Toggle last weapon” mechanics will now remember the last brought-up weapon (instead of the last selected weapon). How was this even a thing? I don’t know.
  • Fixed a rare issue of the Assault Rifle/Pistol reloading after firing only one bullet. We thought this was the way to do it in modern shooters, but as it turns out – it’s not.
  • Fixed an issue with private sessions not actually being private in Survival. Go, get naughty in your locked servers.
Visual fixes:
  • Fixed issues with the water ripple effect in certain cases.
  • Fixed a bug where subtitles rendered through menu simulation (instead of HUD element) wouldn't be rendered.
  • Fixed a bug where subtitles were rendered without blending enabled.
  • Fixed a bug where white overlay from extra life gadget wouldn't disappear when cutscene starts.
  • Crosshair is now visible in third person when using the "Hold to aim" option.

When trying to play the dunes map in coop it asks to download missing mods and crashes/keeps restarting all the time. manually downloading the mods from the workshop didn't help either. anyone else got this problem? any help would be much appreciated. thanks!

IS this the bug I previously came across in the mission "The Die is Cast" where if you load the beginning of mission auto save, you don't get the upgrade?

Thanks guys much appreciated  1.08 is running pretty much flawlessly for me, better than 1.07 which was already quite good. Vulkan on windows 7 is now buttery smooth and so so fast, and both Vulkan and DX12 are running great in Windows 10. So it seems the Vulkan crashing bug that was introduced in 1.07 is gone. I really wish version 1.0 had run this great when it first came out, but its better late than never :TheSeriousBomb:

I'm going to do another full run through the entire game again now that everything is silky smooth.

I just got the game and if this patch has optimizations I would hate to see what it was like before. I have a 2080 Super and this game cant even keep a stable 60hz at 1440p....

I deleted post above where I was after a New Game+ mode. It was avoiding masses of secrets to hunt out that bothered me. As using a secrets guide for so many breaks immersions somewhat.

NG+ would not solve that. It would need a sort of secrets halving mode. Also where the loot from removed secrets was put in to the game for general pick up.

However I could not even imagine the devs thinking it an idea. It sounds dumb when I type it out. I guess I'll either have to use a secrets guide or just not bother with the ones I don't learn.

I did that with SS3. I used a guide for the first play. However I enjoyed the second play without a secrets guide - a lot more. It was just more fun playing the game, rather than using a guide to look for loot. I had memorised enough to play the game without handicap, if I did not secret hunt. They must have developed it that way.

SS3 was one of my all time favourite games too. Played over 300 of SS3 campaign.

Great job, guys!

Some random suggestions for visual, environMental and gameplay changes for the next patch:
-when you change something in (or even just look at) the color menu the highlights of pickups gets screwed up and their glow becomes a flat rectangle
-the trapdoor inside the Colosseum where Rodriguez is coming out has no collision detection so you can fall through the level
-some of the propaganda posters all around the levels definitely need an update (or just change Achriman's model to that one :P)
-you might want to expand the high voltage line all the way to the inaccessible parts of the level in A Breakfast in France because right now it just simply ends in the middle of nowhere and the last pylon is even hovering above the ground
-that building that gets bombed by a Raider in the first level definitely needs an overhaul, especially the door that simply turns black afterwards
-Massimoalready has blood on his uniform when you meet him, as does the wall; both definietly should only appear after the mission
-also, you might want to have the doors to that area close once you start the side mission since the script can get kinda screwy if for whatever reason you decide to chicken out and leave the roof mid-battle

Not sure why the SS4 update notified me about itself. However as always at the thought of an SS-game, I got playing SS4 again.

Have noticed so far that Vulkan runs a better frame rate. Or rather that Vulkan has fixed one place where I used to see some frame rate drop. Or the devs optimised it.

At the start of level three, there were places in that foliage that gave me fps drops, but not now.

Other areas that gave me drops were, the castle, and the way to the quarry. Will see later how they are doing, coz I only on level five I think.

I don't know much about DX12 vs Vulkan. ... However I got a 20% fps boost in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint with Vulkan. It was enough to solidly max out Breakpoint at 1440p with 1080 Ti. I hope SS4 stays maxed without drops. I get Ultra settings and ten customisations.

Yeah sorry, but the other issue with running a secrets guide, is sadly getting images of the map ahead. Areas that you forgot about that you would come to next and surprise, are spoiled by secrets guide.

Then you work your ass off doing all the secrets and side missions. Only for game to take all your stuff away 'TWICE'. ... Yes that is nasty.

Still love SS4 though.

Please can you add something to the next update?

The mummies in the fourth level I think, after the volcano, are too bright. They hurt my eyes, as well as being very difficult to focus on to shoot.

Could you please turn down the brightness on them somehow?
