Cannot leave athkatla/access overworld map

Google tells me that this seems to be a common newbie problem but none of the answers I've found have been helpful.
I've traveled to the city gate of athkatla and this is where everyone tells you you have to go in order to access the travel map... only, when I exit the city, I don't get access to the travel map. It DISPLAYS the map and the minimap of Athkatla, and two locations related to quests (Watchers Keep and the Windspear Hills) but doesn't display any map markers/locations/clickable icons for anywhere else. I can't find a button to exit the minimap or select any location on the map and its driving me crazy. What am I doing wrong? Where am I supposed to click? What the ♥♥♥♥?

Please do not say "travel to the city gate".

Hmm, if you have only Watchers Keep and the Windspear Hills, then it's only two areas that are not in Athkatla you can currently travel to. To get access to other areas not in Athkatla you have to first get them appear on your map (as a result of getting the quest).

To close the map window, just Esc.
