How do we all feel about Dorn's quests...SPOILER ALERT
I just finished Dorn's questline which "frees" him from the service of his demon master Ur-Gothoz, I also rejected the patronage of Ur-Gothoz' rival whatever her name was. As a result, Dorn more or less just got nerfed, and got a second rate two handed sword. Not a good deal IMO. Especially since his "freedom" seems to have no benefits what so ever. I say the Abyssal Blade is second rate because the two handed Githyanki blade you find in Watcher's Keep that seems specifically designed for Dorn as only evil paladins can wield it, the Ir'revrykal +5, is MUCH better. This all makes me sad. Anyone agree, or am I just talking out of my ass (would not be unheard of)?.

Also, when I say he gets nerfed to be more specific I mean he loses some strength, and his special abilities. Those are just what I have noticed so far.

IMHO from a gameplay perspective, evil should ALWAYS be more powerful/easier.
coolgame308 29 nov, 2013 @ 22:29
I agree, it justifies their existance. Apart from that, I think it's stupid that you just get no worthwhile reward for finishing that quest.
robomagon 29 nov, 2013 @ 22:48
I haven't played the EE version of BG2 so please let me know if I'm missing something here.

What I'm getting at is that you set him free. Rejected his possible patrons. You chose the hard path, effectively turning him from an anti-paladin into a fallen (or in this case 'risen') anti-paladin. You SHOULDN'T get some powerful gameplay reward for doing the right thing. You're whole party probably got more experience for doing the quest that way and you got the 'good' character development for him. That fuzzy feeling inside should be reward enough.

Well you set him free from his demon master, so he wont be "powered up" from that connection anymore. makes sense to me.

Thou I would release him into the wild after doing so, since hes clearly as useless as a random peasant.

I'm just not sure who would want that fuzzy feeling. If you brought along Dorn, you already participated in some pretty bad deeds yourself. You know he's devoted to evil. Now all of a sudden you care about redemption? Yeah, maybe it makes sense, but probably not.

Thought it's cool that you *can* redeem him, I'd never bring the low-power version of Dorn. Plenty of goody-two-shoes characters that are quite good already.

It's funny how powerful he really is in BG1, by the way. No matter how hard I try, he is by far my biggest XP earner in the party. 19 strength matters a lot in that game. Perhaps less so in BG2, but still I'd hate for him to lose his function.

Thats why i killed the ugly chick-demon and still kept Ur-Gothoz as his Patron. Not only did i get a really nice mask from him,but also he said he would value Dorn more from now on and think more carefully how to use him.
And as far as i read in the Beamdog forum it doesn't change his story in Throne of Baal much.
So its the ultimate win for an Evil group.

Also i read that there should be a really good black guard sword in watchers Keep somewhere (not sure where) which apparently he can't use if he is fallen.
robomagon 30 nov, 2013 @ 2:06
Yea, I can't imagine any good PC even letting him join the party. The guy pretty much has EVIL written all over him. It's hard to even rationalize letting him into a neutral party.

@Robomagon
Oh but he is such a Charming guy,Especially at Weddings :D
kaffekoppen 30 nov, 2013 @ 2:33
Perhaps a good character would bring him just to make sure he doesn't run around killing people at random :)

Okay i just got the Blackguard Sword from the 4th level in Watchers keep and i can say now that you really really don't want to make Dorn a fallen, here is the stats:

"ir'revrykal" +5
1d10 +5 ,+5 vs good creatures
immunity to charm
50% Dispel magic on each hit.
Blackguards only.
robomagon 1 dec, 2013 @ 1:38
1d10? So it's a bastard sword? Cool. I was hoping it wouldn't be a two-hander. :)

It IS a 2handed sword.

/facepalm
I was mixing up editions of D&D in my head.

That is the sword I mentioned in my original post. Also, we should remember that shaking off his demon masters by no means turns him "good" or anything close to it. He just sort of become more of his own man. Still an evil man, though.
