Easy Money
This is a well known exploit from the original that allows you to get essentially infinite gold. It still works.

Get Hexxat (or any thief with high pick pocket)
Go to Temple District.
Enter the Sewers.
Go to the south end of the map and talk to Roger.

He's a merchant who will buy stolen goods.

He sells 2 Potions of Master Thievery. Buy them and have your thief drink both - they stack.

Hexxat should have 151 in pick pocket at this point, without her cloak equipped. 131 otherwise.
This should be enough to succeed almost 100% of the time at what you are going to do next.

SELL to Roger your most expensive item.
STEAL it back with Hexxat.
Sell it to him again

Repeat as desired.

Infinite money!

You can also do this with the Female thief merchant in Renal's or the fat merchant in Mae'Vars.

If you are going to cheat, do it properly

Cheat Codes

In order to activate cheat mode, edit the baldur.ini file by adding the line Debug Mode=1 under the [Program Options] heading and saving the file. Then during gameplay press Ctrl+Space to display the console and enter any of the codes listed below (NOTE: To deactivate cheat mode, just delete the Debug Mode=1 line):
Effect Code
Enable in-game key cheats CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys()
Full map CLUAConsole:ExploreArea()
Set experience points for selected character or group CLUAConsole:SetCurrentXP("[0-2950000]")
Set gold amount CLUAConsole:AddGold("[number]")
Spawn item CLUAConsole:CreateItem("[item name]")
Spawn monster CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("[monster name]")
Spawn multiple item CLUAConsole:CreateItem("[item name]",[number])
Teleport to location CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("[location number]")

That is the proper way of cheating.

I agree in general, but it's not cheating when the game allows you to do it without editing any files or inputting console commands.

It's a game mechanic. At most, an exploit.

You are practically encouraged to do it, otherwise why are there merchants who can be sold items you just stole from them and why are there potions (which stack!) to make this theft nearly 100% successful?

The way around it would be to code a flag for every item which marked which merchant you got it from and whether you stole it. A merchant could not then be sold something you just stole from him... repeatedly.

Also, editing your gold amount in EEKeeper is the quickest and easiest way to cheat. Just sayin'.

If memory serves, there was a vendor in the Sahuagin City (in the original game, of course, I haven't gotten that far in EE yet :P) that, with sufficient stamina, actually had a higher purchase price than sale price.

Found out by accidentally selling my Holy Avenger to 'im. Then thought 'hang on, that's... cheaper to buy... back...

..."

*BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL* One million gold obtained. :P

You're cheating the npc, not the game! This would totally fly on tabletop. (Actually it may not, depending on your gm.)

sorry to necro a thread this old, but if for whatever reason you do not want to go to Roger the Fence (for example not wanting to enter the temple district so as to not initiate "The Unseein Eye" questline) - there ARE other fences you can make use of. The following fandom wiki entry lists them, though the first four are from BG1(SoD):
https://baldursgate.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Fences
on the topic of making easy money - you can keep the wands you find in Irenicus' dungeon unidentified and when you get to a fence (such as the Black Market Thief in the Shadow Thieves' main hall, where you should be able to get as long as you have Yoshimo in the party) you can then then sell them for 1 gold a piece. Afterwards you will see the vendor is selling them for over 10k - steal them back and identify them to find, they have charged the wands up fully (each would have only one charge, but after the vendor charged them they now have 50-100 charges, depending on wand type). you can now steal and sell them for VERY fast and easy money. disclaimer: the above only works if the store is not already selling a wand of the type you are trying to fence. In that case they will only charge them to the amount the wand they already have has.

I do this all the time, and I do it to the guy in Mae'vars guild as it seems like I am screwing over Mae'var even more - just steal his rouge stone, sell it back until I have enough money to get me through the game!

The exploit with the Sahuagin priestess in the City of Caverns has evidently been fixed in either an update or patch. Her purchase prices are still better than any other merchant but they are now slightly lower than her selling price. My party had a reputation of 20 and my charisma was maxed so I was getting the best price possible.

Are you people having some kind of competition as to who will dig out the oldest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thread?
