new game starts character at level 8

I loved this game in the past and was realy happy to see it on steam. However starting a new game and creating a new character sorcerer it gave me higher level spells to pick which i thought was odd, and after going through the starting cutscene and looking at my chracter.... level 8? why? i may be being stupid somehow here but any help on this? i dont want to play at all with this going on.

Its normal for the add-on to start at a higher level. If you play shadows of amn you will start at level 1.

8 is the normal starting level for BG2. BG1 takes you to roughly that level, and BG2 continues that story. You can even import a BG1 character into BG2 if you so choose.

oh i honestly dont remember starting at a higher level when i had bg2 in the past. Starting shadows of amn still gave me a level 8 start. Thanks for the response, if its supposed to be that way and i just have an inaccurate recollection of how it goes then fair enough, i'll just crack on with this legendary game

If you would be able to start at level 1 you wouldn't even have the skills necessary to get out of Irenicus' dungeon alive.

Yep, it was always this way. Your starting level can be a bit higher still if you import from BG1 with Tales of the Sword Coast.

I remove the level cap restrictor on BG1 now that it uses the tables (and some of the spells) from BG2. So when I imported my Inquisitor he was level 10 naturally via the questing in BG1. That two level head start was really nice.

You start with 89,000 XP if you create a new character. For single class characters that means they are either level 7 or level 8.
