At what level would you recommend fighting Liches?
How do I prevent them from using their Time Stop spell? As soon as he does that, he queues up a ton of powerful spells and just lays waste to me as if I'm nothing. My PC is an Inquisitor, level 9, and my level 18 dispel isn't strong enough to penetrate his shielding (as he is uninjured no matter how many of how +3 weapons hit him). I suppose I must wait until later, but how much later? Also, any strategies to deal with him.

I cast the level 5 mage spell breach on them, which takes down all their protection spells. I also use a magic mace which i found that will destroy undead unless they make a save vrs death at -4.

Liches, even relatively powerful ones, can be killed at very low levels. It has to do with your tactical approach. Daystar helps, as does using breach or other protection-stripping spells. Decent fighters help a lot, and most of all, timing is everything. Leaving near the start of the fight and re-entering the room after the lich's first spells wear off is a good way to get around problems like Gate, Time Stop, and that pesky Firestorm.

Liches have a finite number of spells, so making them waste them quickly limits the options the lich has left. Also, try to get off the first strike. Damaging the lich before it attacks can even mess up its first spell casted, which often means making the lich waste Time Stop.

Liches are immune to spells of level 5 or lower, including Breach. For whatever reason Dispel Magic/Remove Magic will work on them however. They have a continguency that will either include Improved Mantle or will be Protection from Magical Weapons (it depends on the particular Lich file). Either way basically for the first 4 rounds [24 seconds] of a fight they will be immune to most if not all of your weapons (and standard Liches are also immune to normal weapons innately). Anyways, your inquisitor should be able to dispel it. A standard Lich is around level 11 (and your inquisitor's dispel magic is working as if you are level 18), however in all likelihood (based on what you've written) the one you are fighting is level 19. Basically at the moment your dispel magic won't likely work against an enemy at that high of a level.

If you've got a thief setting traps before you fight the lich is a good idea. At level 9 though you'll probably want to wait for awhile just to pick up better weapons and spells that will work against it. Having a few fighters keeping the Lich busy while a cleric casts Sunray or someone else uses Daystar is also a good idea (but Sunray is a level 7 cleric spell so its not something you can access at this point and you need to kill a lich to get Daystar).

Now if you are trying to fight a demilich its going to be a bit more tricky.

The Flail of Ages works wonders vs them. The various elemental damages disrupt their magic easily, making them quite laughable.

You don't have to kill a Lich to get Daystar. You just have to get past one. That's a big difference. I used Daystar to kill the Lich guarding it.

Speaking of Demi-lich... Kangaax is proving to be quite the problem. I casted Protect from Magic on my PC and was having him just beat away at his health as he did nothing... but after he was "Near Death" he fully healed and then became invulnerable to ALL damage. The shield lasted well on for 5 minutes, yet for whatever reason, I did no damage to him with any of my magic or weapons during this time. What do I do?
DnD Detective Dec 19, 2013 @ 10:57pm
@Wayfinder Fair enough.

@minsc what weapon are you using? Also Kanglaax has two forms. The demi-lich version (2nd one) is the tougher one. It has 90% resistance to physical damage (slashing, piercing, blunt, missile), is immune to level 8 spells and below, and is immune to weapons below +4.

Flail of the Ages + The Sleeper (with 3 proficiencies in Flails and Two-Weapon style). I hope these are sufficient, they've faired me well throughout the rest of the game so far.

In your case the Flail of Ages is a +3 weapon. It won't work against his demi-lich form.

What levels do my weapons have to be? Can I use one of those conjured/summoned weapons in their stead? I haven't really seen a +4/+5/? level yet, and I really, really want to get that Ring.
DnD Detective Dec 19, 2013 @ 11:15pm
You need +4 or higher weapons. That or a weapon that hits as at least +4. Anyways just get Daystar (which you can get beneath the Crooked Crane inn in the Gate District). It can cast Sunray and is very good against undead (it also counts as a +4 weapon).
The Hermit Dec 20, 2013 @ 6:57am
I got the weapon... my protect from magic must block it somehow so I got another party member to go alongside him (the protected one taking the Imprisonment) and I used the effect on the weapon, but the only thing it did was create a bright shining pillar of light over the character's head and that was it.

Get the mace of disruption in the graveyard district. It will destroy undead really fast.

On my wild mage, I believe I started killing them around level 12-13. Lower is doable. The one in the Crooked Crane is the worst because he timestops and casts Meteor Swarm, which I could not heal through. I had to leave and reenter. After that he was surprisingly easy.

I found the liches on the Kangaxx quest very easy. Kangaxx himself, in both forms, is surprisingly easy if you just know his spells:

First, buy the +5 sling from... either it's Adventuremart or Joluv in the Copper Coronet. Give it to someone with a high strength (slings benefit from strength now).

Kangaxx in lich form: Killed that with 2 x Sunray (1 from Daystar and one from Viccy). He's a bit annoying if you don't have enough Sunrays!

Demilich form: Death Ward and Spell Immunity: Abjuration on my mage. Then I let my mage tank him while Dorn hit him with a +5 sling. He only ever uses death spells and imprisonment. The only difficult part is making sure you have enough Spell Immunity and making sure they *never* run out even for a second.

Go to a temple. Buy "Protection from Undead" Scrolls. Laugh maniacally as you beat gaxx to death as he just sits there like a lump.
