New to the game, question about a Paladin
Hi, like i said new to the game. This game looks very complex and hard to understand for a begineer due to the many choices. So i am interested at rolling a Paladin (always fond of melee classes), so what are the best stats to start off. Would like to hear some opinions. Thks in advance for taking ur time to write.

Max out strength, dex and constitution. The rest feel free to play around with since they aren't important for a pally. You will also want to go with a two handed sword since there is a certain amazing sword just for paladins. When choosing a kit go with either Inquisitor or Cavalier since these guys are the most useful overall. When choosing a party make sure it compliments your character. Meaning don't take too many warriors. I sually go with 1-2 melee guys and the rest are a cleric, thief, and two pure mages. Best of luck to you.
Keep rolling , i ended up with a 99 for my cavi. hes now 107 and a terror . Oh i imported him from B G 1 HES WELL SEASONED NOW . 19 , 19 , 19 , 14 , 18 , 18

What these guys trying to say is this: You're a melee, you need maxed out Strength for the dmg obviously (and wearing lots of stuff in your bags), Dextery to increase your chance to avoid damage and last but not least constitution for a greater healthpool.

So it's:

Str 18
Dex18
Con 18

Wisdome does NOTHING for you as paladin and is only interesting for clreic type characters
Same counts for Intelligence, it's for Mages obviously

Charisma is on 17 out of 18 and is kinda usefull as well I guess. You can max that out as well.

Blackguards are also pretty darn strong, albeit they're the exact opposite of Paladins.
Fear & Level Drain immunities are insanely useful in BG2, "Poison Weapon" can be applied to ranged weapons too (goodbye Mages & Spellcasters) and Absorb Health ignores Magic Resistance.
And you even get all the Paladin spells to boot, Armor of Faith & Remove Fear & Doom & Draw Upon Holy Might remain useful through entire game.
Only problem is that there's already a very strong Blackguard companion available to you.

If you want to go for more spellcasting-centric warrior, (dwarven) Fighter/Cleric is very solid option.
ty for ur comments, nice suggestions. Just wondering how exactly the dual class works?. Is any lvl that it should be done, or i can do it anytime, or when is usually the best time to do it?
Thats the situation: Thiefs have their sneaky abillitys, they unlock doors and disarm traps, while clerics/druids have their healing abillitys and mages have all the cool magic stuff. Thing is, all these roles don't do any dmg in the long run, for they have no interesting fighting abillitys. So usually you combine one of these characters with a fighter:

Thief: You max out your trap disarm/detection abillity (100) as well as Lockpicking (100), then you change your class to fighter. So you have all the fighting abillitys of the fighter PLUS your tief stuff.

Same, but in the opposit way, with mages and clerics/druids. You start as a fighter, level him to (I think lvl 3 or 5 to get your 3th weapon abillity, and tons of HP) 3/5 and change your class to mage or cleric/druid to unlock and level all their abillitys as well.

Also elfs and halfelfs have the abillity to multiclass, means, they level booth classes the same time.

Not you worry about the paladin though, for he can't Dual Class. Also pick Chavalier or Inquisitor. Chavalier is kind of a tank like character while the Inquisitor is a overpowered magekiller with the power to clean up all magic stuff form your enemys. (I prefer the play as Chavalier btw, also you can pick up one of my most favoured party members, Keldorn, the inquisitor).

And if it goes to weapon proficiencies, take ++longsword (most common weapon ingame, you will always have a good weapon for your Main Character), ++Bas.tard Sword (most powerfull 1h weapon late in the game) and ++2h Sword and Stile, ONLY if you play WITHOUT Keldorn. Early/mid game you'll find the most powerfull 2h weapon only for paladins. If you decide to play as Inquisitor you can choose ++Xbows/Longbows instead of the 1h weapons.

Pretty much everything you might want to know has been said already. As for weapon proficiencies its really up to you, most pallys get 2handed swords because 1 of the better weapons in the game is pally specific. A couple of more game specific notes to the wise however- if you roll a cavalier and want some ranged abilities, you can pick up axe or warhammer. Also if you are rolling a melee character you might want to pick a point in a blunt/crushing weapon, different creatures in the game are vulnerable to different weapon types.
