Aerie and Haer'Dalis romance

In my current BG2 run I wanted to "see" the Aeris/Haer'Dalis romance.
My main character is female. I thought it might be easier this way.

However, on some forums I read the main character has to be male for a love triangle to start.

Some people said it's ok if the main is female, it will just skip the first part/love triangle bit.

Does anyone have any experience with this? (female main char and Aerie/Haer'Dalis)
Is it true they might leave the party at some point in their relationship?

They will flirt in banter, but that’s it.

If you’re male and romance Aeris, Haer’Dalis challenge you for her, i never did this, so i don’t know if he really fight to the death or not.

He does. Alternativ is, you can disband both of them.
