Pickpocketing and failing

If I fail a pickpocket and the target NPC goes hostile, is there any way to permanently calm them down? Particularly if it's a shop keeper and I want to buy/sell stuff again in the future.

Yeah...don't get caught.

Though probably a Mage spell might do it for a little while, but I don't think there is a permanent way.

Nah there isn't. Worst case scenario is that you can always just use the console and spawn another copy of the merchant (outside of their shop).

I admit that I save-scum through pick-pocketing. Would be cool if you could bribe your way out of it somehow so it's not all or nothing.

Yeah, seems only slighty unreasonable that a merchant would violently react to a person who is obviously somewhat skilled at martial arts, despite failing to nick your stock; bad thief, but you're a part of a party of 6, so the odd's aren't in the merchants favour!.

Seems kinda silly you can't jsut quickly duck out and bribe a magistrate, or do some time if you're so inclined to RP an RPG.

Oh come on now, are you seriously saying that if 6 mean-looking warriors with blood still dripping from their weapons came into your shop and stole a scroll, you wouldn't you fight them to the death?

Hahaha, yeah. I can see them calling the guards and more or less refusing to do business with you in the future, but not trying to fight an entire group of adventurers by themselves.

Merchants never made much sense to me in this game..

You kill a merchant and cant steal his belongings off his body?

I have enchanted katana's on me, a crazed ranger, a drow cleric, a mage, and yet they go hostile on me when I try to steal???
