How magic works in this game?
Hi guys, I have 2 mages in my party but they cant seem to use any spell, I have a lot of spells learned (they are lvl 9) and I cant cast them! The runes are all grey...

Is there any guide on how magic works in this game? that would be much appreciated...

Select a mage and open their spellbook. Make sure they have spells selected in their spellbook. You can only cast each memorized spell once each time you rest (you can cast the same spell more than once if you memorize it more than once). You need to rest if you want access to spells you already cast, or spells you just selected to be memorized.

Items can be identified automatically if you examine them with a character that has high enough lore. If you don't have high enough lore you can identify items by memorizing the identify spell, or using an identify scroll. If you can't do any of those, you can also identify items by taking them to a temple and paying 100 gold per item to identify (look for the '?' icon when browsing).

Take your armor off.

only mage robes and a handful of specific armors allow arcane spell-casting while worn.

The identify spell is used via the inspect item menu. you right click an unidentified item, then click identify and pick spell. But as with all arcane spells, it won't work while wearing armor.

Ok thanks guys, did not know that armor would keep me from casting...

Also, how do I memorize a spell? Selecting it from the spellbook?

Thanks!

Conjurors can't use spells or scrolls to identify items, so keep that in mind.

The game should say something about mage spells being disabled when you equip armor.

THATS COMMON SCENCE

*facepalm*

What I meant was I am pretty sure that the game tells you that mage spells are disabled if you equip a piece of armor. As in a line of text appears somewhere on the screen saying so. If memory serves.

And no, it most certainly is not common sense. There are plenty of games that let you equip heavy armor and still cast mage spells.

Yeah, 3rd edition gave armor a % chance of failure, that changed from armor to armor, though 2nd editon, barring house ruling, outright prevented it, except for Elven/Drow Chainmail, since they're considered no more encumbering then normal clothes.

I feel dumb. I am not wearing armor, I am a sorcerer - how do I use my spells? We have slept 8 hours, the spells are not gray. Also how can Jaheira use her spells - and how do I put them in the spells slots. Missing something simple....???

If you have spells selected in the spellbook and they're not grayed out, they should show up in your spell menu (the button on your main action bar with the moon and stars).

To clarify, Wizard spells (mages/sorcerers/bards) are restricted by armor, priest spells (clerics, druids, paladins, rangers) are not. Jaheira can wear armor and still cast spells, Imoen can't. A cleric/mage in armor would be able to cast their cleric spells but not the mage ones.
