I heard there is supposed to be some fellow at city gate who mark it on the map, but no luck yet for me- and I been at city gates like 10+ times now.

The man you want to talk to is Flydian and guides say he is wandering around the center area of the City Gate map. If he isn't there, try resting in the tavern and see if that helps. I think the companion Mazzy will also mark it on your map if you save her in the shadow temple, but don't hold me to that.
