you don't really 'choose', Shadows of Amn IS Baldur's Gate II, the other 2 are expansions to Baldur's Gate II. So, nothing to be concerned about.

Shadows of Amn (SoA) takes place shortly after the events of the main campaign in the first game (Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition).

Throne of Bhaal (ToB) takes place shortly after the events of Shadows of Amn (and finishes the series main storyline).

Black Pits 2 is basically like a combat arena where you fight various enemies. From a storyline perspective it takes place at some point after the events of Black Pits 1. Its not related to the events taking place in SoA or ToB.

story-wise i would start with baldurs gate 1 EE, because baldur's gate 2 is a direct sequel to the first one. shadows of amn is baldurs gate 2 and throne of bhaal is the addon which concludes the story.

Story-wise start with BG1 but to be honest starting with BG2 then working through the two expansions is best. Minsc for the win.

which two expansions? there is only ONE expansion for BG2! "the pit" or how its called is a cheap arena fighting scenario which beamdog had integrated and it has NOTHING to do with the actual game or story.

Throne of Bhaal was released as an expansion to Shadows of Amn

He's basically saying that ToB is the ONLY expansion for BG2 and that that "The Black Pits II" thing doesn't count.

exactly! like i said, baldurs gate 2 has only ONE expansion / addon (throne of bhaal). don't understand the meaning behind kamster99's comment, i said that it has one o.O.

Ahh I see well in any case its all semantics. Black Pits 2 is just continuing a storyline that was started in BGEE and both BGEE and ToB have a connection now to the black pits (which you will learn if you take the right people in your group). Baeloth in BGEE and Neera in BG2EE

Heck even Overhaul isn't sure what to call it. For instance for Ipad they say

"Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition includes the original Shadows of Amn campaign, as well as the following expansions:" (then they list all the new additions as well as the Throne of Bhaal)

expansion means additional content of the game but the original game is BG + ToSC and then BG2:SoA + ToB. they remastered the game for modern system but the game in itself is unchanged. the balck pits is just a little gimmicky extra which i honestly never touched and surely won't touch because for me it feels kinda pointless having an arena like game-mode in a story-driven RPG like BG just feels kinda weird. but everyone their own taste. but fact is that the game belongs to bioware / black isle and they got the rights to remaster and resell it. the "real" game + addon / expansion is throne of bhaal which makes it ONE expansion.

The definition of an expansion is a pretty broad one. The black pits 2 means the game as a whole has new item files, scripts, creature files, etc, some of which gets re-used during Neera's quest line in ToB. All of which is also available for modders to use.

Bioware just owns the rights to the infinity engine (not to the actual game content). Interplay (aka Black Isle Studios) don't own any license or rights here (they used to but lost them when Interplay went bankrupt years ago). Wizards of the Coast is the company that owns D&D (including having ownership of the content of BGEE/BG2EE). Atari is the publisher of it. Either way Overhaul/Beamdog got approval to include this new content and like with BGEE and the first Black Pits

http://www.beamdog.com/products/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition

they've been calling the Black Pits/Black Pits 2 "expansions" at least a few times.
