Consider reading the very excellent class FAQ to determine what your main character should be and some tips on how to use NPCs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/470765-baldurs-gate-ii-throne-of-bhaal/faqs/9853
The important aspect of Baldur's Gate is to play smarter. Read your spells carefully, scout, and be paranoid. Leveling isn't ever going to make you stronger. Leveling gives you more options, but doesn't by itself make you stronger (especially in BG2, since with the exception of spellcasters, everyone else plateaus at around lvl 10-12 and what gear they have becomes more important then what level they are (and even spellcasters don't need extra levels..it's possible to easily clear all of BG2 without ever gaining a single level or exploiting resting as long as you're careful and use your resources wisely) if you make bad choices with the means you have available.
"I just got really far in THE beginning"
and that's just a general bs kind of answer (no offence). That's like saying "to win chess, you need to think and strategize".... Well of course... That's the whole game. My answer is solved anyway so unless people have relevant questions, i don't think this needs to be bumped. Thanks anyway.
