How am I to kill this guy? apparently he is considered the easiest dragon but as someone who has already killed Firkraag and the Shadow Dragon he really doesn't seem like it.
Party is
Male Human Generalist Mage
Imoen
Minsc
Jaheira
Aerie
Korgan

Baldur Gate Wiki. Maybe some tactics can be found there. Or at Gamebanshee. Another website that has a pretty full cover of all of SoA and ToB.

He has unique spells which make can him a tougher fight IMHO than Firkraag. As with any dragon, do not approach as a group. spread your party well apart. It will help with breath weapon targeting and wing buffeting. Not to mention his favorite spell "insect plague". If you are close together that spell will disable your whole party. Make it difficult for him to target more than one party member. Dragons see right through illusions so invisibility/shadow door/etc are basically useless.

Have your party drink a speed potion before you trip the encounter and have your MC and Imoen memorize a lot of breach, pierce magic, and lower resistance spells. Pierce magic is great because it does both.

Summon Hakeshar and Nishruu is helpful as they will suck his spell energy (and therefore spells) out of him. AbuDalsim (sp) Wilting works well on him. Once his magic resistance is dropped, you can magic missile him to death. Melf's Acid Arrow obviously won't work since he is a black dragon.

That's a couple of idea, right off the top of my head. There are a lot of other suggestions you'll see on the websites referenced above.

well, I would suggest some of the following spells - Chaotic commands on the whole party, improved haste on at least your melee fighters - put Korgan into enrage - bless/chant/protection from evil - you could stack lower resistance in a trigger, and stack magic missiles in a lesser triggers - stoneskin/iron skin/mirror image on as many folk as you can (two items in the game provide mirror image too for your fighters too) - priest spells like draw upon holy might, remove fear, are great - kelborns warding whip and breach will help with his protections.

Basically buff your party before you engage and debuff him

It all depends on character's level. Firkeeraag and shadow dragon's fights are easier IMHO, not because they're weaker, but because it's easier to apply the only good strategy in all this kind of fight: buff yourself, debuff the dragon. In this fight you need to be faster and do no mistake.
Follow other's advice. I would add also some summoning going one at the time.
If not at the first time, you will succeed in a few time.

3 arcane casters. Get 3-4x lower resistance on him, spell trigger is amazing for this. Use jaheira the useless to draw his attention with iron skin. I dont remember what element his breath is. Acid or poison. Then use two waves of summons to help tank or replace jaheira. Iirc ALL dragons blast off with dispel/ death spell, so thr first wave of summons will die instantly and b/c of how dispel works one character will lose all persistent spells.

Also once his MR is down you can nuke him with horrid wilting. So one trigger with lower resistance and one plain cast then the last mage can get a guranteed hit with it. or spell sequencer with skull trap!

He is a black dragon, so breath weapon is acid.

Just worth noting, you do not want to advance to the nine hells will spell triggers active, it causes and issue in TOB where the trigger becomes unusable, and you can't replace it. Therefore, it is wise to use up ALL your triggers on this fight, and/or, the dork who nicked your soul.

That may have been fixed in the latest patch. I've experienced that problem before, but on my last play-through it was fine.

Managed stick Desintegration on him, although I also used a Time Stop scroll to cast freely, and Khelbens Whip to try and drop some of his protections

Lower resistance
Lower resistance
Greater malison
Finger of death

Edwin got a lot of experience in his stats for doing this.

Spike Traps. Works on everything.

Those work on Firkraag and the shadow dragon because they remain neutral toward you unless attacked so you can lay the traps, but Niz initiates a conversation as soon as he sees someone from the party and it always ends in hostility. Dragons see right through invisibility so there is no chance to set any traps close to him. He does move around but you'd have to set traps so far away the odds are he won't trip one off.

Not to pick a fight, but I made it work, Summoned a magic sword and character with hasted item went in and talked. Booked out of there and left the sword. Then pulled it back and he went right after the bait. Boom!

Very clever ploy. Bravo.

Necroing this thread, but credit is given where its due! All this is good advice to a guy who has not played DnD enough to understand everything. But I nailed the dragon by an army of magic sucking Nishruu and its higher version! Also the Dwarf with his Dragons Bane axe and a few fireballs helped!
