Is multiplayer actually still busted in 2023?

My buddies and I are all on 2.6.6.0 and we tried multiplayer back in 2016 and gave up thinking we would wait for all the bugs to be ironed out. Fast forward SEVEN YEARS and we reinstall, update, and no one can join a room. Did they just give up patching this game? Is there a secret to getting multiplayer working? All help appreciated.

I did end up playing with a friend who owns the game on GOG, but the game crashed. It's very unstable.

Essentially, it's still old tech. The MP code is from 2000. Even the EE itself will be soon celebrating its 10th anniversary. Personally, I'd recommend using Hamachi, it's worked for me every time.

There is a full 6-person MP playthrough of BG:EE on YT by DM_Wyvern that confirms MP can work. Yes, with hiccups and problems, but still can work.
