Is this worth it/fun?
Hi all,

In short - this type of game isn't my usual thing but I think I'd find this weirdly appealing (e.g. I put about 30 hours in to Torchlight 2, which looks a little similar, and have about 130 in Talisman which is same vibe but a different set-up). The bits on Torchlight 2 that triggered me a little was not being specific on certain recipes for building certain weapons and tools & it was like oh great because I didn't search out the specific gem of X I am dying about 15 times here etc. Used to enjoy old fashioned Dungeon Crawlers back in the day (e.g. Eye of the Beholder/Knightmare - yes I am that old) but weirdly didn't get into the Legend of Grimrock or whatever it was called which looked like it would appeal. Also was a big fan of all of the versions of Gauntlet (e.g. again I'm old enough to remember when it was 2D).Think I'll pick this up on sale (as it looks like it will have value and a bit of longevity) but am not totally sure what to expect here (e.g. it looks kind of like Children of Moarter which have but didn't totally get into - one of those games that I start and doesn't grab me immediately and may come back to etc.).

Grateful for any thoughts on this one (good or bad).

it's one of the best cRPGs of all time, BUT it's not even remotely anything like Torchlight despite being isometric/top-down. It's very very dialogue heavy & It's based on D&D and uses dice rolls & the combat + movement are RwTP aka real-time with pause. You issue a command, see result, pause, issue another and so on. This game is like Pathfinder or Pillars of Eternity, not like Torchlight, Diablo etc.

But very much worthi it and on sales it can go down to as low as 5 bucks so definitely worth a try! There's also a story mode aka a very easy mode where you never die if you just want to get into the story.

Oh so long and short of it - if I liked Talisman on cards and dice rolls (e.g. both spell and physical combat is on dice roll), I'm probably going to be OK here. Am not 100% on dialogue heavy but I'm sure I can weather that. My OCD/ADHD traits (not diagnosed with either but wouldn't surprise me if I have both) clicked with Talisman though as I play with the max AI and skip to the next player the whole time (compressing a 3 hour game down to about 75 mins max). Also play with as many decks and boards in play as well (as why not make it a challenge lol).

I am also not a youngster anymore, and this game (The BG saga so both 1 & 2 with DLC) i have on top 10.

Probably top 6.

It is well worth some time and has immense replay value. One of those games that stay with you for life.

I too have had it many years (20+), including the original on CDs. It and BG1 have been the most played games in my library for the reason mentioned above, immense replay value.

Just ask yourself 3 questions

Do I like a good story line in games?
Do I like a challenging game?
Am OK with old fashioned graphics (the game is 20+ years old it has dated graphics)

If the answer to all 3 is yes, I would play the game 100%

Don't skip the first one. BG1, BG2 and Planescape Torment are a must play Infinity engine games IMO. You can also get into Icewind Dale if you dig these and want something with minimal story and all action.

Re: 1 - not the end of the world but it has it's bonuses.
Re: 2 - mildly e.g. if it gets beyond stupid then I have issues (e.g. I had a phase where I played character roulette on Talisman and the amount of "bad luck" I had on the way to finally getting a win was insane)
Re: 3 - I have an 11 year old IMac - so that's pretty standard lol.

Most the difficulty will come from the very old rule set (which can also take a moment to get used too like you want lower armor # not higher) and knowing and remembering which spells you use to buff and debuff a lot (not so much 1st game but 2nd game 100% since you high level)

With regards to number 2, this series has a steep learning kerb but it is no dark souls, I suggest starting out on a lower difficulty to get use to things.

I STRONGLY suggest having a read through the manual AND if you start in BG1 (recomended), talking to the watchers is worth it, they have tips. plus you get an achievement for listening to all the watchers!

BG2 SoA is pretty good though, ToB is high level gameplay and BG1 is low level gameplay, which is why it is a good start - plus for the character development.

My thoughts on Siege of Dragonspear are not constructive so I won't say anything about that.
fun, but main villain again a missed potential
