Can't select a high-level ability or abilities?
I was leveling up Aerie and after looking at some guides, I wanted to try and give her Improved Alacrity, but for some reason, the button to select it (along with many others) is completely greyed out and it cannot be selected. Maybe it's just my unfamiliarity with DND systems, but I cannot figure out why these abilities are unavailable. It baffles me that I cannot find a single instance of why this is, even by searching the internet. They don't state any requirements or restrictions, so anyone know what gives?

I believe I had a similar problem, I think it may be her intelligence is lacking, it's considered a 9th level spell.

Improved Alacrity requires mage level 18, which means Aerie needs about 6 million XP before she can choose it...

Okay then. I guess I'll get when she hits that level then. Thanks.
I'm still baffled by the fact that I can't find any mention of that requirement before being able to get it.

This is the downside of many abilities with any multi-class character. If an ability requiers 3 mill xp for a single class, that xp requirement is doubled for any 2-class MC's and even tripled for the two 3-class MC's, the Fighter/Mage/Cleric and the Fighter/Mage/Thief.

My first FMT player suffered big time of this, and never reached lvl 9 spells or any abilities since it needed 9 mill xp and the base game (TOB) is capped at 8 mill.

You may find some easy to use XP cap removers that works just fine (they need also spell progression extensers) to go around this. I ended up playing a SOLO run with my Fighter/Mage/Thief adn he reached cose to 18 million XP total (6 milion in each class).

Your Aerie will get a lot of abilities once she reaches 6 million XP, but she will have less than a full mage. The true beaty of many MC is to choose from two HLA classes but for the Cleric/Mage this is not much of a gain.

- But the true Power of Aerie lies elsewhere. You will see, she is a goddess in the end.

you get the same issue with Jan Jansen, as it has already been said, the problem is the mage level is not high enough to cast level 9 spells. What I suggest you do for all these character types, is take the extra level 6th, 7th and 8th (when they can cast level 8 spells) early on so you don't have to worry about them when you can get the quest spells.

Aerie and Jan Jansen will both be able to cast lvl 9 mage spells, but it will come later on, likely in TOB, essentially at double the xp that a single mage has. Or in SoA if you are a completionist and get all xp possible.

As there is enough xp in this game to get a 6 man party to well over 6 million xp each.

If you delay picking them up until your main character has just above 1.5 million total xp, they will both start the adventure at 1.5 million xp (750.000 x 2) and that is basically free xp and a 'jumpstart'.

I sometimes do this by simply ratting on Jan Jansen and sending him to jail. Then i go release him later on. But he can just as easily stand forever in the Goverment district and try to blackmarket his turnips. The Circus tent with Aerie can also just wait until you want to do it.

Me personally I love Jan, I think his story telling is hilarious at times, especially when he comes out with some pure random crap just as you are about to fight a dragon or something! I get him right away and he is my levelling thief throughout the series. He makes use of many things my party normally can't, such as the wondrous gloves, and can use a shield and helm, when he get's that Use Any Item. plus those cheese traps are great when you just can't be bothered with a proper fight, with say, Draconis.

it goes in a 9th level spell slot. it would be worthless to take before she has any.

not sure why it would need to be mentioned anywhere
