Anyway, EE Keeper seems to overwrite 4 bytes at 458 - 45B when changing kits. "00 80 FF FF" is for wild mage.

Although they seem to do it wrong. When i tried to load the edited save it was still just a mage. And these 4 bytes for a newly created wild mage are "00 80 00 00", so you might want to try that instead.
Failing that you could get a Windows VM - overkill for one edit, but we are not going to run out of Windows-exclusive software any time soon
It's java based and works natively on linux. You can even mod spells and creatures there, not to mention items, save editing is a bit of a chore, but can be done. Obviously
