Have you tried EE Keeper? That one might work.
Anyway, EE Keeper seems to overwrite 4 bytes at 458 - 45B when changing kits. "00 80 FF FF" is for wild mage.
Here's a pic: http://postimg.org/image/wt9vmxeuv/

Although they seem to do it wrong. When i tried to load the edited save it was still just a mage. And these 4 bytes for a newly created wild mage are "00 80 00 00", so you might want to try that instead.

According to beamdog forums, EE Keeper works with wine https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/16497/ee-keeper-updated-to-v1-0-3

Failing that you could get a Windows VM - overkill for one edit, but we are not going to run out of Windows-exclusive software any time soon

Try NEAR INFINITY
It's java based and works natively on linux. You can even mod spells and creatures there, not to mention items, save editing is a bit of a chore, but can be done. Obviously

ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE YOU CHANGE SOMETHING!
