Vampires
So these are tough opponents and I'm at the stage where I'm running into a lot of them, a particular bugbear is the energy drain power. Any tips for fighting them?

Amulet of Power and Improved Mace of Disruption both give immunity to level drain (The IMoD also kills any undead (ANY undead) with 1-3 hits. The Non-upgraded version does too but doesn't give level drain protection). Negative Plane protection, the cleric spell, also blocks it, but has a very short duration. Berserker's enrage gives immunity for the duration, and a blackguard or undead hunter is also immune.

There's a few more items that give it as well, but they can't be acquired till ToB when there's basically no vampires left and only a handful of enemies that level drain for that matter.

Aside from that, you'll just have to be careful and stock up on restoration spells while trying to minimize how often they can hit you.

-------------------

I'm not really a fan of the Protection from Undead Scrolls, because they're supposed to break instantly on hostile action, but don't...which makes you completely invincible vs undead.

(and intelligent undead are supposed to get a saving throw vs spells to resist the spell and see you...but that was another thing they were apparently too lazy to implement).

I don't blame Beamdog though...those were issues in the core-game and like all broken "features" that benefited the player would cause a massive out-cry if they were properly implemented.

Protection from Undead scrolls(merchants i think temples priests to), negative plane protection spell under priest along with some items can resist it also, but if we talking earlier on then the two forementioned. Amulet of power i can't remember if its from the thief quest is a great help also since you can put it on spell casters. which are the ones in my opinion that is the most severely hit by it as their whole spell selection resets every time, instead of keeping a memory of the spell you selected. Which can be a royal pain to setup everytime over and over again.

EDIT: But in short to best ways are through items or class immunities and protection from undead scrolls as the scroll last about 1 or 2 hours it give a long duration if you do not rest.

Another possible help is to put dual class fighters in the front against the blood suckers. They will lose levels if the vamps level drain them, but take no hit point damage. For instance a level 12 swashbuckler/level 13 mage will begin losing mage levels, but only 2 hit points, until all 13 mage levels are drained.

This hardly ever happens. It will be a chore to go and rememorize spells once the mage is restored. It beats having the mage dead. A dual class level 10 fighter/level 11 thief wearing a helmet of charm protection and a ring of free action (or dual wielding the short sword that does the same) can cut through a pack of vampires before he begins taking any physical damage.

There are several helmets of charm protection available in the game. There's also a necklace of negative plane (level drain) protection. I believe the head of the shadow thieves gives you that when you cough up the 15,000 gold pieces.
