Starting stats for Cavalier
STR 18/55
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 10
WIS 13
CHA 17

Not sure if I should change WIS and INT around a bit. Any suggestions?

Isn't there Gauntlets of Ogre Power you can get early? Means you can drop strength as /55 isn't great (compared to /91 onwards).

If I lower strength where would you put the point/s?
kaiyl_kariashi Aug 2, 2014 @ 6:23am
1 more point in int would allow you to survive 2 hits from a normal mind-flayer.

Wisdom is worthless to paladin (and you can't lower it below 13 anyway due to their minimums).

Lowering strength is a bad idea. The +1 to-hit, +2 damage and 70 lbs of carrying capacity are far more useful than anything you could get anywhere else. Plus if you get a strength enhancement (*cough* Watcher's Keep *cough*) you'd go up to 19 which would mean another +1 to hit, +4 damage, and 250 lbs of carrying capacity.

Ok thanks for the info.

Why would you want Cavalier? Role-playing reasons? Because that's not the strongest Pala kit.

Irrelevant with the amount of items in SoA and ToB which set Strength to a Giant's. Not to mention there's A LOT of strength potions since money is not a problem at all in BG2.

I'm not really a power gamer I just didn't want my character to get slaughtered too easily. It is definitely a role play choice for sure.

There aren't really all that many of those items, and they take up slots that could have more productive items placed.

Untrue until pretty late in the game, unless you're uber-cheesing it with potions of master thievery and black market merchants. Plus, every vendor who has giant strength potions only has a limited number of them. Potions can be dispelled, they run out at inconvenient times, they take up space, and are generally a nuisance.

And in all of your heavily incorrect assertions, you fail to come up with the better location for the stat point besides Strength. Where would that be, exactly? He's already got 18s in Dex/Con, 17 is plenty of Cha, Paladins get no bonuses from Wis...so...Int? A cavalier shouldn't be dealing with mindflayers anyway. Jan, Yoshimo, Hexxat, or Valgyar with Chaotic Commands and the Boots of Speed will -trivially- clear any and all maps that have mindflayers. It's kind of a joke just how easy those things are when you can backstab with impunity.

You could also start off in bg ee and get 1 more + 1 str and in the second game get 20 str

True less you're going after higher save vs spell, higher wisdom give a couple more points. Can on occasion be useful some spells give a default -4 to save vs. spell and if caster is specialist its another 1 or 2 points extra penalty,

Wisdom does not provide any boosts to saving throws. This is not 3rd edition.

Advanced dungeons and & Dragons 2nd edition have saving through bonuses on wisdom aside from extra bonuses for priest spells, however if i remember correctedly the bonuses to priest spell don't apply to Paladins but then again been a while since i played so i might remember wrong.

18 Wisdom is normally a +4 save vs spell bonus. After testing i stand corrected it does not seem to apply to Baldur's gate unlike it does on Pen & Paper, as i thought i remembered. I guess i must mixed it with another AD&D video game that does.

But again like i said i did apply to Pen & Paper rules http://psycho5554.wix.com/dungeonsanddragons#!__wisdom
