Make sure to buff your party as much as possible and send in your tanks first. debuff the trolls, greater malison and slow work well very well as well as chant if you send in your casters as melee. Don't forget haste to double attack speed.
If you're still struggling you may also lure the trolls out individually through the gate into the hall before locking out the others to take on after. You may rest and recover used spells depending on your repertoire and level.
Lastly don't forget summons and fire arrows which are plentiful early in the game.
Thank you for the tips, i have tried all but flail of the ages and crom feyr (im not sure what that is). I only have 2 heads for the flail, i dont remember if i need a handle too?
If i knew the location of my saves and a safe host to upload them, i would provide my savegames in the post too.
The comes the bombardment. Nalia casts cloudkill (it always seems to work on Torgal and the other two) Aerie fires one too or if I have Anomen I use Holy Smite spells. Nalia next uses fireballs or skull traps. If I have any potions of fiery burning Yoshimo and Minsc toss them into conflagration. Nalia might add another cloudkill near the end. If any of the three are still alive they are unconscious. The combat log will help with that. One last fireball or potion of fiery burning does the job. If needed I have MInsc hit them with Acid Arrows. They seem to work better than Arrows of Fire, they do more elemental damage 1D6 vs. 1D2 (or3).
Crom Feyr is a weapon you get after finding several pieces from tazok, illithids in the temple sewers, adventure mart and finishing one of the underdark quests (can't remember exactly.) But the flail of the ages also has a high chance to cast slow upon contact which also adds elemental damage, thuper effective against trolls. Anomen equipped with said flail is god-like
The one does not necessarily rule out the other, a lot of games that that been thoroughly tested still come up wit bugs for some people.
Have you tried my save?
As i also wrote, i even tried to cheat to kill him and i still cant, he just gets insanely high saves to any fire attack when i get him to the knocked out phase where i need to use fire/acid.
the thing im still open for is that he is scripted and i need to complete something else or that i need one of the weapons that people suggest. (but somehow i also wonder why the door to him is open if that is the case.)
You can partially assemble the flail of the ages using any combination of the three heads you find in the castle, but you need to do so NOW because you will lose access to the forge since you are a mage and will not be allowed to keep the castle as you stronghold.
You already found the forge so you just need to click on it. And maybe go looking for some golem filled rooms where a third flail head could be hidden.
As for the save, he died just fine. He appears somewhat resistant to fire arrows but he died to the 3rd fire arrow on the first attempt and to a acid arrow spell on the 2nd.
Having said that, your party is not particularly well equipped (one magical weapon shared between 3 tanks isn't going to be good enough) so you might want to come back after you acquire some weapons.
I would also love to replace minsc with a paladin
As for not being well equiped, maybe you should search the keep? there are several magical items that will help with the boss, such as a +3 axe, frost weaver, a +1/+4 v giants war hammer, the knee caper, as already said, the flail of ages +3, various magic melee weapons in the keep, such as a +2 dagger and a +1 quarter staff... I suspect you are probably role playing the hero... pillage that keep, take everything that is not nailed down it does not upset your employer one tiny bit (kill them golems too, they have nice gear stashed away) also, if you are struggling with the boss after taking everything, rest up, get some buff and damage spells and teach him a lesson!
Regarding the boss: someone already helped you there, but just in case I found it very helpful to have all of my clerics have at least one cast of Flame Blade on them.
I also usually keep at least one or two Melfs Acid Arrow (or later Melfs Minute Meteors, which absolutely slap and act as free magical and elemental damage ranged ammunition that works against many enemy types).
Just in case one of these suckers rears their ugly heads and I don't (yet) have the Flail of Ages or Crom Faeyr on me.
Use any damage type you have to down the troll ASAP, then use a couple of those on the prone body while party members without elemental attacks move on to the next target.
Having Jaheira summon a Fire Elemental is also very useful if she's high enough level already. They're decent tanks and do fire damage innately, so they're almost made to beef with trolls.
Suckers are immune to fire and weapons of up to +1 enchantment (so normal attacks do squat, making them resistant against fodder) while wielding a +4 fist attack that deals really decent crushing and fire damage!
If you do, remember to summon the elemental just before you apply Haste and your other short duration party buffs so it can benefit!
