Lol. That Edwina twist never gets old. Still makes me laugh even after all these years...
Authors could have introduced some new companions, more interesting ones. But an INT 18 specialist mage, inspite of the evil alignment, had its fan base and likely influenced the writers' decision to add Edwin also to BG2.

Not so much anymore, since Siege of Dragonspear explains a lot about what happens between 1 and 2. However, SoD cannot fix some of the crap, such as what happens to Ajantis, Kagain and other companions. And although it emphasizes how Safana gets more and more tired of adventuring, which influences her attitude, SoD cannot change the dubious cameo appearance of Coran & Safana in BG2.
