Hexxat "was" human before she became a monster. You are willingly traveling with a Genuine Evil Monster. And that is Cool, since it is a RPG game.
You can say the same for Wilson, but he is a Bear and really not a monster, but Potentially Sriously Dangerous Animal. Like a Gorilla or Tiger would be.
If you were a Goiblin and then turned into a Vampire, it no longer matters that you once were a Goblin. You are now a 100 % monster. Goblin Vampire, Dwarven Vampire, Human Vampire, all Monster.
That they added Hexxat as a Vampire was SOOO Cool. And It was SOOO sad that her writing was so messed up. It could have been one of EE's finest moments and creations. Even Rassad is better writing than Hexxat.
The Clara portion i have realoded so many times and went through every dialouge option and it is a total mess. Makes no sense at all.
Later on Hexxat is interesting "only" for a few minutes and when her quests becomes active and even then, in her questing dialouge, extremely lacking.
It is still fun to play around with her in some games, at least for me.
I did quote already and you blatantly ignored them. so I won't bother lost arguing time with you and will quote again, but then with a short comment to avoid you persist blatantly ignore.
So now provide advice is evil? Nalia behaves like an evil dumbass, how Hexxat is evil? That's the reverse, that she control herself is a quite good behavior.
Mazzy behaves like an evil racist hater, How kind Hexxat keep be against such dumbass assault isn't being good? I would even say Hexxat behaves like an angel.
Aerie behaves like an evil racist, quite like calling someone negro or black despite you know his name. Do that with a black knowledge you know, you won't get a calm controlled PLEASE. More a bash in your racist head.
So Korgan behaves like an racist (call her vampire) evil dumbass he is constantly, Hexxat stay cool and calm, that's good behavior, obviously Korgan needs some bash on his head every days.
I can't believe you read all that as Hexxat evil, even manipulate, that all in your Fantasy not in the words.
And then I don't deny you'll have evil quotes too, but you and others deny the good parts, that's HUGE.
Good thing Beamdog added totally unnecessary companions into a 20 year old game, so it can suddenly click better with modern audiences.
Oddly I can tolerate Neera... mostly. At least her quest is kinda practical and fun, minus collecting cats of course. Temporary access to Thayan scroll merchant and amulet +2 are nice. Blue elf and drunk mercenary captain are funny... kinda. Rasaad is okay-ish, you still have to gear him properly like Khalid in previous game for him to shine a bit, though his CON is clearly lacking. Dorn I have mixed opinion about. Black knight is cool concept, but they tried too hard to make atypical half-orc and went almost full 360 back. He still has penchant for violence and cruelty. NwN handled atypical half-orc companions better, on top of having heroic tiefling, Eilistraee drow and nice kobold.
At least the rewards from doing their quests are stellar - tons of gear, some quite overpowered (thayan circlet, silver dragon armor). However, the writing is shoddy at best. I have companion mods that are far better than anything Beamdog writers vomited out. Not to mention other classical games.
Probably the only companion who is making sense and fits into the game personality-wise is Rasaad, too bad they had to make him a monk, so he's useless in combat (Beamdog seem to have a hard on for monks, for some reason, that's why they nerfed them in EE...). I like him the most from the new companions, well, not "like", maybe "tolerate".
Neera is obnoxious with her raspy voice and forced jokes. Beamdog wanted another "Jan Jansen" character, and they failed. I liked the Wilson easter egg, and I did like some of the characters in the abode. But Zaviak seems so absurdly out of place, like "hey dude... hey man..." This is not how a character from fantasy middle ages setting would ever speak.
Dorn requires very specific acquired taste... like taste for human blood and cringe pop culture references. Again, this man has no business being in a high fantasy game setting.
And Hexxat... I never played with Hexxat in ToB, so I don't know how her story ends. But in SoA, she seemed kinda "meh". I would describe her as a walking wasted good opportunity.
And the thing I dislike the most about EE NPCs is the way they forced on you in the vanilla EE game. Shows how much arrogance beamdog has in their sorry excuse for writing. Good thing there's the convenient EE npcs mod or I would be playing BG2 classic.
Hexxat made pact with very powerful and evil lich for her own gain, to have her humanity returned, so she can die as human. Seems overly dramatic, as for example when you kill freshly vampirized Dace Sontan in Spellhold his soul finds peace instantly.
Being blunt with a murderer does not make you evil. Having poor manners when dealing with a murderous VAMPIRE does not make you evil or racist. Most people don't like vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc. Does that mean they're all massive evil racists too?
But oh wait, this vampire is using superficial charm on me, she's trying to get me to like her. The vampire that rarely speaks is suddenly being nice.... I wonder why? You know who else does that? Real life serial killers.
Again... being blunt or rude to a murderous vampire does not make you evil, or a dumbass, or a freaking racist. You can see Hexxat's true colours in the quote you provided, look how quickly she turns from sweet to killer.
Aerie: I would have words with you, vampire.
Hexxat: Please, Aerie. Call me Hexxat.
Aerie: Hexxat was a woman who died two hundred years ago. You are an abomination—one I'll no longer suffer to live.
Hexxat: Your suffering will end soon, I promise you that.
Someone genuinely trying to be good would not reply like that, they'd plead or run away rather than straight up murdering Aerie.
..................
I hope for your sake you never meet a real wolf in sheep's clothing.
"There is nothing I won't do to stay alive. Nothing. Do you understand?"
If she truly wanted to die, she could just take off that silly cloak and go sunbathing.
First point is Hexxat is in party in whole SoA+ToB. So nope, not any attack on Hexxat like I quoted is tolerable in this context.
No you can't call a brotherhood soldier negro because you know he did murder in past. That's rather violent to do so.
For Aerie/Hexxxat exchange, Aerie has still an evil behavior, even if ok Hexxat attacking isn't good behavior, it's still Aerie that started it and I would bash on her head first, Hexxat only after.
Your comment are very worrying they hint a high level of intolerance and an impossibility of forgiveness, With people like you a prisoner would never get any job. But what you don't see, is life isn't black and white, you don't own the good side nor the truth.
It's you that have a serious problem on forgiveness and tolerance, not me being too naive.
And for Vampire thematic, it's like you never seen Buffy or Angel series for example. It's like you never played Mass Effect and jack.
All your comment would lead to instakill, Jack, Angel, and the British Vampire I don't remind the name. It's not making you the good guy nor the guy with opened eyes, more the lame blinded buy and rather dangerous when they believe own the truth, fanatics behave like that, for themselves they are right to hate and act accordingly. That's why have a tolerance reflex, eventually a forgiveness option in mind is nothing minor.
You seem weirdly upset that people call a vampire a vampire. The other NPCs see straight through Hexxat's "nice person" act, they see her for what she is, whereas you seem completely blind to it.
This is D&D, there's an alignment system, good vs evil. You can't put an evil murderous vampire with a LAWFUL GOOD cleric and expect them to get along.
Aerie's behaviour is evil because she doesn't like a vampire that kills innocents? Are you even reading what you're writing?
You're painfully naive.
She's a vampire that has killed hundreds of people, and continues to kill innocents without any remorse. She's immortal, so she can technically do this until the end of time.
She could try feeding on bandits or other baddies, but no she chooses to target innocents and makes no attempts at trying an alternative. She freely admits this, she admits to losing count how many people she's killed, because why should she care, they're just pawns and food to her. All her own words.
That fact that you ignore all that just because she pretends to have good manners means you're the one with serious problems.
Wrong again. I love a good morally grey character, but Hexxat is not one of them, she's 100% evil. I love a good redemption arc, but Hexxat never once shows any remorse or chance of changing her ways. She just uses or kills people until she gets what she wants, which is to die. She dies without so much as acknowledging the party or much of anything.
Hexxat: "None have written of me yet; I doubt any will start now. In death I shall be no different than I was in life: in the shadows, forgotten, naught but whispers and secrets."
She's right about that. A boring and forgettable character.
I give you credit to have keep it calm enough, I easily ignore your accusation of me being naive.
But I didn't put that much effort, so I find bizarre you are so tolerant with aggressive behaviors against Hexxat who is a long date member of the party, and don't allow you more aggressiveness.
Anyway, I clearly lost my time, but still, I quote you ignored comment cases of Jack or even Angel, it's saying you know your arguing has a big hole but prefer ignore it.
EDIT:
With all extreme reactions Hexxat is generating, she is obviously not a forgettable character. But sure we can agree her writing is a lot too much imprecise, not enough rigor.
It's even saying how much idiot is Aerie to say that, she can't say "boring and forgettable character." for a character she hates that much so obviously, lol.
EDIT:
That said if Hexxat became a character I won't forget easily, it's only from the ToB content, before I had no clues on the causes of the level of aggressiveness against her from many players, but didn't bother either, I was keeping her only for a Thief thematic play.
ToB proves it easily by doing rest in pocket plane, no way Hexxat can leave murder innocents and come back, and she still fully rest. But even without ToB specific context there's many rest providing clear counter cases.
Without mention that beside Aerie fantasy, nothing is done to justify it, it would have been easy to make it clear by the writing, but it wasn't possible because of many rests context, hence nope Hexxat don't need murder many innocents to rest feed or anything in back of party.
Just in Aerie imagination and in imagination of players enough naive to believe her, it's no way sustained by the game.
EDIT:
Now the fault isn't Aerie, it's Aerie writing done for Hexxat, Aerie doesn't behave like that or I don't remind other cases where she is so much hateful and intolerant.
Keeping calm is easy. It's only a discussion about a game.
I'm not sure what you mean. If all the other party members don't like her, chances are she's the problem. Or are you saying I should be more aggressive?
Because there was nothing to say... I don't watch Angel or Buffy or whatever it's called. I played all the Mass Effect games, but I didn't like Jack or use her very much.
Yes I know an evil character can change. Sarevok and Viconia can both have alignment changes if you guide them towards doing good. But Hexxat does not have that option, she never once shows her good side, she shows nothing but selfishness and evil from start to finish. Her being polite has nothing to do with good or evil. Many evil characters have good manners, just look at Hannibal Lecter or Gustavo Fring.
But she is a poorly written character. The very first thing I said in this thread is... "I'm always a bit surprised when someone says they like Hexxat... She just feels like an unfinished NPC mod to me. It's like they had an idea for a vampire companion but couldn't be bothered to flesh it out with good writing, like she never got past the placeholder stage."
Memorable characters don't feel like unfinished mods. And speaking of mods, Hexxat is just the official Valen... Valen was a popular and overpowered vampire mod for BG2 long before Hexxat was ever added. And soon we'll have another vampire NPC in BG3.
So there's really nothing special about evil vampires in fantasy games. Beamdog failed to make her special.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That doesn't prove much. You never see any character eat. You also never see them go to the toilet, but it doesn't mean they've all ♥♥♥♥ their pants.
Yes, that's the problem with most of the new writing added to the other NPCs, they behave out of character. But Aerie can be pretty fiery and mean at times, especially when she's jealous...
I don't think there's much more to say about Hexxat...
