Ended up using NearInfinity, checking the Baldur.GAM for save file...he had no location (!?). I updated his location to reflect the Copper Coronet, altered his XY coordinates to be between two party members. Seems to have yanked him back from the abyss.
I placed two members of my party (say, Imoen and Jaheira) side-by-side, exactly as "high" up the map but to the left and right. When I set Minsc's coordinates in NearInfinity, I set the Y to the same value and the X to the average of Imoen and Jaheira's values. Hey presto, there he was!
Thanks everyone for trying to help
