Longsword Proficiency is sweet
start out with Daystar, +4 to hit and +4 to damage evil things-how often do you come across things that aren't evil? Namarra from graveyards, 1d8+4 base damage+ 10' silence radius, adjatha the drinker, it heals you! its from planar...sphere or prison, blade of roses+3 from bernard for freeing the slaves, dragon slayer from some tomb, so that's the entire early and mid game covered. Late game is blackrazor angurvadal and the answerer, and all three of these swords have totally gnarly powers :)

The entire game is covered! "So's the celestial fury!" well, that is true :P but IMHO I feel the CF Is OP, and I don't mind that the Daystar shreds undead, their level drain annoys me. Meanwhile the CF chain stuns people, and it feels cheap for them to not even be able to respond through stun after stun.

My fighter always use 2 handed swords. Another weapon is Flail, The Flail of Ages is the bane for most dragons.

i am not the biggest fan of longswords myself. Decent as they are i dont find them fantastic. I prefere axe over longsword. Axe of unyielding, Stonefire, Frostreaver and Azuredge are all great weapons and ofc flails with the already mentioned FoA and also the amazing DoE.

A dual Axe / Flail user is a mighty thing. But Long swords will be there for you right from the start, and the variety in the swords abilities can be a great asset for a Fighter. Of course other Fighters can use the swords abilities too, enough to carry the sword around.

The correct answer is pick a bludgeoning weapon instead, as there's so many enemies that resist piercing and slashing while none at all resist crushing.

hey i didn't know that about resistances, that makes a sense as to why the flail of ages hits so hard as the on-paper damage isn't higher than some other weapons.

True crushing damage is the best damage and i think chain mails and splint mails are the only armors that has bonus vs crushing. BTW Shambling Mounds are immune to crushing damage ;)

The main reason to have Blunt weapons are the Undead. And there are lots and lots of Undead.

Blunt is good against most enemies and bosses in the game. For killing undead its better to use daystar, azuredge or mace of disruption

There are several solid longswords; may take a little bit to get the better ones but there are plenty of options to hold you over till you get the big boys. Almost opposite with warhammers; when you get the runehammer, you're definitely gonna swing for the fences at the cost of fewer options. Too bad there are so few decent katanas. Celestial fury while only being a +3 weapon can still be a gamechanger if you get it in a decent amout of time. I personally usually have a little trouble with that particular fight, fun as it can be. and it certainly helps to know about the surprise pit fiend before that fight even happens.

I have my Anomen or Vicona use the Flail of ages and Korgan or my Pro use Axes and duel wield with Bastard. If Korgan in the Party than Pro uses Long swords with Bastard. But Who ever my Priest is goes to Hammers after returning from the Drows UnderWorld. STR 25 cant pass that up. My Pro is always some mix with a fighter, Half Elf.
But I did play with a Gnome Illusionist/Thief...
