How to save Viconia?

I go into the government district, and there's a mob of people about to burn Viconia at the stake. I've tried talking to mob members to try and get them to back down, nothing. I've tried talking to the guard nearby, he refuses to intervene. I've tried attacking the mob, and they immediately burn Viconia and Jaheira acts like I got her killed on purpose. How do I stop them from killing her? I know that it's possible, I just don't know how to do it.
