the only good thing you can do with anomen is turn him to a darker path iirc
That's because he is!
If you cannot stand his voice, oh well, are you sure you're a role-player?
For the rest everything has been said already.
I would chose Anomen instead of Aerie and use him as the party's Cleric instead of a frontliner. Use Nalia till you can get Imoen. And then add Keldorn as the frontliner, with Minsc as the second wacker. Jaheira would assist with priest spell casting as well as lending a hand in the fighting. Your party would still suffer from a deficient thief, which is Nalia. Nalie is a great mage but a supar Thief. So I would go get those guys and then do the main quest right away to get Imoen as soon as possible.
The "annoying" thing is subjective. The whole "dies faster than a lvl 1 mage" is wholy inacurate, and totally dishonest. Even exagerations made to add a sense of humor to a remark must have some level of truth to it. This doesn't have ANY truth in it at all. Anomen is capable of wearing the best armor and gear in the game, and he's tougher than any pure Cleric thanks to his Fighter class. Stop misinforming new comers. And learn how to play BG2 before advising people.
I agree "the annoying thing" is subjective. In my opinion he's extremelly anoying but if he looses he's chance with the Order he turns into a dungerous member. I only hire Anomen in a good party if my PC is not a divine caster.
This adds to his versatility. Basically, he's a companion whose alignment you can control. This means you can use him in both Evil and Good parties. Which is pretty amazing to say the least. You can turn Viconia into a neutral, but you have to wait till ToB to do that. With Anomen you can do it very quickly. Good point there mate. That guy I was replaying to had not idea what he was talking about.
