1) Foebane (bastard sword) is hugely useful. It comes in the basic +3 form, but can be upgraded to a powerful +5 version, using Flar's scabbard (found in Watcher's Keep), once you get to Throne of Bhaal.
2) Katanas: Celestial Fury is fairly decent.
3) A fair number of longswords are good. Daystar, for example.
4) Flail of Ages is useful, especially for killing trolls, as a hit from the fire head will finish off an unconscious one. Can be ugraded to +5 version in ToB.
4) Other 1 handed blunt weapons of note ... Mace of Disruption and the Crom Feyr warhammer come to mind. The upgraded version of the Mace will protect from level drain when wielded.
I find foebane found on floor 1 of watchers keep makes floor 3 of watchers keep much more managable. but I gave it to Dorn. Especially if this is ToB and you've upgraded it.
theres also the Purifier found on floor 3. which is more of a paladin sword, a mini carsomyr.
But yeah if you don't have thoughts. theres the flail of ages +3 and the axe +3 you get on the fighter's strong hold questline which are decent enough choices. people speak well of the axe of the unyielding though it takes forever before you get the piece to upgrade it to vorpal.
I know that! The point is, I had gotten Foebane this time around, but my first runthrough of BG2 was a few years back, and I had forgotten that Flar's scabbard even existed, let alone that it was needed for a weapon upgrade. Had I recalled that fact, I'd have searched more diligently until I found it.
There's a fair number of weapons that have multiple forms, and relying on memory alone to keep track of them can be unreliable. Some can be upgraded by Cromwell in SoA, some by Cespanar in ToB. It helps to know what items you need to upgrade them and who can do it.
As an example, if you don't create Crom Faeyr in SOA before chasing off after Irenicus, you won't get it ever, since you won't have a chance to go back to Athkatla, and Cespanar apparently doesn't have the "recipe". The +4 version of Ravager is not terribly exciting; Wave and Dragonsbreath are more useful halberd class weapons. So, unless you know that the Serpent Staff is needed for an upgrade ... and where to find it ... you will likely miss out on the much more impressive +6 vorpal version.
There are bunches of weapons that require several components, steps or actions to make ... the Equalizer, the Silver Sword, Lilacor ... and a bunch more that exist in 2 or more forms. Mace of Disruption, Runehammer+5, Angurvadal etc. etc.
Fflar Starbrow Melruth - the orginal possessor of this balde was a Lawful good moon Elf who fights with a shield.
"Only a capable warrior of good heart may take up Keryvian. Like all of the Baneblades of Demron, Keryvian is a powerful magic sword that is imbued with holy energy and that is particularly effective against outsiders, undead, and any evil-aligned creatures, "burning" the life (or unlife) out of them." Sound like something that will go well with Paladins.
Foebane:
+6 slashing damage vs. undead, shapeshifters (doppelganger, lycanthrope, rakshasa), demons and devils
Cavalier:
Bonus +3 to hit and +3 damage against all demonic and draconic creatures.
Demons - BEWARE!
Foebane:
+1 to all saving throws
Paladin:
+2 to all saving throws
After this research tell me that there's better weapon for Cavalier in terms of role-play. Like Carsomyr is an obvious choice for Inquisitor, Foebane is the best for my Cavalier in my opinion.
Foebane+Shield of the Order!
Thanks for discusion!
Purifier also gets +1/+1 vs Chaotic Evil, but in addition, +10% extra MR, 3 dispel magic per day, 1 Mass Cure pure day, and can be dual-wielded with Foebane for fights where your shield isn't really helping you without sacrificing some of your magic defense.
From an efficiency standpoint there's little reason to spend the Eye of Tyr on Carsomyr.
