Plus, I tire of Minsc blubbering like a baby as he gets stuck constantly by enemy weapons. The evil dwarven berserker is a MUCH better fighter, but lapses into senile trips down memory lane as his time with the party increases. The ranger trying to get into the sphere of the planes is decent--at least as decent as you can be as an off brand fighter. I really can't say much for the usefulness of fighters who sacrifice of 3 of their 5 possible points of ability in any weapon.
Minsc NEEDS to use his berserker ability, or he gets cuts to pieces in any tough fight. He is a hopelessly bad fighter, and requires more management than the rest of the party put together.
against what enemies does minsc need more AC, really? He can hardiness, defender of easthaven and Armor of faith for 80% redux.
he's for clubbing undead with the IMOD+5
Minsc is a fine damage dealer. He could also be a fair tankon high levels if he dual wield Defender of Eastheaven, cast Armor of Faith on himself and use the Hardiness high level ability. on lower levels he should probably not be the main tank (though Jahira is great for that). I think I've used his rage only once and then just stopped using the rage at all. It usually does more harm than good. But minsk if fine if you don't use rage.
As for Keldorn, slap some dex boosting gloves on him and he can be broken as hell due to his inquisitor dispel ability. Seriously, almost nothing can resist his dispel ability, it's far better than a spellcaster casting dispel and is a real lifesaver.
He's also one of the only ones that can weild Carsomyr (a paladin charname and thieves/bards with "use any item" are the only others), which is by far one of the best weapons in the game.
As a side note, the evil characters do tend to have a slight edge mechanically IMO, of course the trade-off there is that you have to worry about your reputation getting too high and having them leave. It's easier to raise your reputation than to lower it (at least until later in the game) since many quests boost it.
Also in terms of the fighting/tanking department, many other companions outshines him hands down.
I only used Minsc once in my first SOA playthrough. After experimenting on other party members for subsequent playthroughs, I ALWAYS ditch him after escaping the dungeon.

But Minsc can totally pull his weight and he's by no means a bad character. He can certainly get through the games most difficult fights without getting "cut to pieces" if you give him the right equipment and are the right level for the encounter.
I like to pair characters with their "suitable" equipment to determine their effectiveness. It's silly if we were to compare say Keldorn vs Neera because both of them are in different classes.
Of all the characters available (ranger/fighter) and their specialization, stats and equipment, Minsc is probably the worst simply because he doesn't have any specialization, (gear) which is suitable to equip him with which makes him "reliable". Example, Keldorn and Casyomr. Edwin and Robe of Vecna or Aerie.
Boo is too young to avenge me are the words I always hear from him. Honestly, just ditch him.
