High-end equipment for party?
Hey, I've been wondering what's the hi-end equipment I should look for in EE. currently I'm at the end of chapter 3. My party is Blackguard (PC), Korgan, Viconia, Yoshi (Imoen later I suppose? Didn't decide yet), Hexxat and Edwin. I've been having tough time in some fights where some of my party member's weapons would be "ineffective", and it does feel like I could find better defense options too.

So what are the best armor options I have, and what rings/necklaces/etc. I should be shooting for? So far I've got:

-- PC
- Ring of Earth Control (which is kinda meh)
- Guard ring +2
- Helm of Balduran
- Full plate mail
- Medium shield +2 for when I have to switch to one of my longswords
- The Burning earth +1 for enemies vulnurable to it
- Namarra +2 for when I feel like I need to be playing with shield in other hand, silence nice too
- Sword of Chaos +2 for everything else

-- Viconia
- Girdle of hill giant strength so she can equip heavy armors
- Amulet of Power for her as well (Edwin sadly can't use it, and nobody else is a caster)
- Helm of charm protection
- Full plate mail
- Mace of disruption +1
- Arla's Dragonbane +3
- random bullets I come around
- Shield of the Lost +2
- The Kneecapper +1 in bag in case I run into giants? Not sure what qualifies though
- Flail of Ages +3 in bag for when I get flail mastery on her

-- Korgan
- The Eyes of Truth (just because I had it)
- Full plate mail
- Large Shield +2
- Frostreaver +3 (hard to replace since he has 5 mastery in axe and 2 points that I've put into sword and shield style for now)

-- Hexxat
- Pale Green Ioun Stone (better than nothing)
- The Night's Gift +5
- Cloak of dragomir (taken off inside dungeons/caves)
- Worn Whispers
- Shortbow +2 (best I could find)
- The Shadow's Blade +3
- Arrow, +1 or higher if i find any

-- Edwin (or rather Edwina currently)
- Adventurer's Robe
- Pearly White Ioun Stone (better than nothing)
- Ring of the Ram
- Cloak of the Stars
- I usually load him/her up with darts if I find and generally avoid engaging in melee
- I do have Staff Mace +2, Quarterstaff +2, Dagger +2 in bag just in case

-- Yoshi
- Orc leather +3
- Shortbow
- Katana +2 (will be taken away soon)
- loaded with arrows
- I'm not putting good gear on him since he will die really soon anyway

-- Extras in Dragomir's Respite
- Ashen Scales +2
- Darkmail +3
- Duskblade +2
- Shadow Armor +3
- Elven Court Bow +3 (but nobody can really use it)
- Arbane's Sword of Agility +2
- glasses of identification
- Human Flesh
- Shortbow of gesen part
- The Equalizer part

For most of the game, +2 weapons will do. There are very few enemies that require +3 or even +4 (note that for ranged weapons, it is the ammo that counts, not the weapon). If you dont have a +3 weapon, the spell "enchant weapon" can help - this alone should kill everyone except one enemy in SoA who requires +4 (an optional demi-lich, although rewarding).

But beware. Many casters will cast some form of immunity spell, like immunity to magical weapons. Use "breach" spell to take it down reliably (you might need to cast true sight first to be able to target the caster with the spell, if invisible). Such immunity spell lasts only 4 rounds though, so you can simply wait as well.

Certain enemies will also have immunity to a weapon type. Clay golem can only be damaged by crushing weapons (other golem types dont have any immunities to weapons, although they might be quite resistant). Otyughs are immune to missile damage.

If you are attacking an enemy and you neither hit nor recieve an immunity message, they are protected by "stoneskin" spell - either keep attacking to break through or cast "breach".

What you are LIKELY running into is either mages who cast protection from magic weapons. which means you have to wait 6 rounds for it to pass or cast breach or similiar

or a few golems.

there are some Golems that are only vulnerable to Blunt damage and there are some golems that require a +3 weapon.

I.E. the flail of ages +3. beyond that your +2 weapon will largely cut it. Flail of ages is found on the fighter's stronghold nalia's keep mission. which you got the ring of earth control. just take the 3 flail heads back to the forge and combine them.

You can get Lilicor very easily by heading to the sewers under the copper coronet. being a +3 two handed sword.

but its likely the protection from magic weapons things. so you run around with some summons, the mage casts pro magic weapons, you leave the summons and break contact.

wait 40 seconds. come back in and finish up. easy peasy.

One more thing: Trolls are invulnerable to damage when unconscious. Use fire or acid damage to finish them off. In the "good old times", one would learn this from tips during loading screens, but with todays PCs and the enhanced edition, these no longer exist :)

I thought it was something you knew from reading bound DnD novels

in BG1 the werewolves only being vulnerable to silver weapons is just something you ....know.

Or you could read the dialogue because you are literally told about this before you are given a bunch of fire arrows by the de'Arnise captain.

- Flail of Ages +3 in bag for when I get flail mastery on her
It would be advisable to give this item (one of the most powerful items in the game due to the slow effect and elemental damage which bypasses stoneskin) to a frontline fighter who can actually use it.
Shortbow +2 (best I could find)
You can easily get a better one by freeing the slaves in the Copper Coronet. You can get infinite +1 arrows/bolts on the first level of Watcher's Keep, which can be obtained without too much fighting.

Frostreaver +3 (hard to replace since he has 5 mastery in axe and 2 points that I've put into sword and shield style for now)
You are almost always better off using an offhand weapon (defender of easthaven for defence, belm/kundane/scarlet scimitar for offence). It might be too late to change it for this playthrough.

Belm in particular shouldn't be absent from your list of items given that you already completed the Druid quest.

Mace of disruption +1
It might be worth noting that this item counts as a +4 for the purposes of what enemies can be hit by it (upgraded version counts as +5). There is also no reason not to get the upgrade since it just requires you to do a short quest for the temple (you don't even have to do the Cult of the Eyeless first)

without reading a guide you probably wouldn't know to get the ore to upgrade the mace you need to start the quest, get both the alloy and the real stuff, and not give the real stuff to the artists. despite getting it. like drop it on the ground if you have both otherwise he'll take it.

don't think you can use the alloy to make the mace +2. even though its fundamentally the same metal.

Modern RPG are run to the arrow, the quest markers are big yellow ! you don't even read the quest, just go to the arrow and either kill the thing or loot the thing at the arrow.

I don't read anything. unless I get confused near the arrow.

Fire arrows for trolls, but you can also use the Flail of Ages once you have the fire head attached. Or any fire weapon. Shield of Balduran is cheese vs beholders and gauths.

Specialize in Halberds. The most OP weapon in the game is Ravager +6, which you won't get until ToB. You can, however, get Wave in SoA. Good against fire creatures.

On my evil party run, I left Imoen to get home on her own, nor did I take Yoshimo along to Spellhold. Dorn is an absolute monster once he gets the Visage; also, I gave him Foebane. Not only is it better than the Abyssal blade, it's a 1 handed weapon so he can use a shield.

Korgan is OK for his berserker immunities, but Dorn is just as good and doesn't have to rely on berserking, which is limited in duration, for his immunities. It is actually possible to get him the sword Ir'revrykal from the Githyanki encampment on level 4 of WK in SoA, but it's a PITA and you will probably have to serve up a healthy meal of cheese at two spots. He doesn't really need it, Foebane will serve for just about any combat in SoA, so let that one wait until ToB.

I gave Hexxat the Tuigan bow, Kundane (only +2 but double attacks) and the Dale's Protector. She can also use domination vs weaker foes. She doesn't have a lot of health, so is best used to attack from a distance, but can get in a nasty backstab when opportunity arises. Also good for setting traps. Give her the Robe of Nondetection when she's not out in the daylight and she's a good scout. As a pure thief, she rises fast and will get HLAs before anyone else. (Use any item!!!)

Consider taking Jaheira. She's neutral rather than evil, but will tolerate the others as long as you keep the party rep from dropping too far. And she is an absolute Mage Killer with Insect Swarm. Give her Staff of Arundel for the extra high level spells. If you really don't want to take her along for RP reasons, then I guess Korgan is your next best choice. Note that after the Harpers turn against her, you CANNOT drop Jeheira from the party without losing her permanently.

Edwin ges the Robe of Vecna and Staff of the Magi. 'Nuff said. He can also wear that stupid looking Mask of King Strohm, which acts as a helm to protect against critical hits.

Viconia needs a strength item if you want her in melee. Mace of Disruption is decent weapon for her. Her MR is already high, so boosting it further makes it even harder for an enemy to get a spell to stick on her. Add in a decent set of armor and you are good to go. Full plate is nice. (This is why you need a constant strength boost for her, not just a short-lived combat buff; otherwise she is too weak to wear this stuff).

You can drop Jahiera, just need to imprison or turn her to stone. its only when she talks to you after you kick her that she's gone for good.

might even be able to get away with a silence spell.
frdnwsm Oct 12, 2018 @ 12:27am
What happens if she makes her save against stoning? Doesn't she turn hostile?

Imprisonment ... never tried that. Seems a bit roundabout however. I suppose it's worth doing if you want to kick her temporarily and re-recruit her later, but why would you want to do that? She's the only one of that entire crew who is multi-classed, which means she needs as much experience as she can get if you want to use her at all. (I'm looking ahead to ToB here).

Remember, once you head off to spellhold, that's the crew you are stuck with until you get out of the Underdark ... unless you decide to recruit Imoen, that is, which I don't when running an evil group. That's a potload of exprience Jaheira will miss out on if you dump her.

Thanks all for comments :)

On side note I mostly had problems with golems that turned out to require crushing damage and +2 / +3 weapons, and some mage bosses that would indeed cast protection. I got Breach on Edwin since then, so now it's not an issue. I did know about trolls being weak to fire/acid before, no idea where from.

Didn't know about werewolfes though, just didn't spot any silver weapons so thought that means it's not a thing.

I think I did screw up Dorn since I did kill both demons and now he lost his blackguard spells, probably will have to dig up some old saves and restart from there :\

Had a fun moment killing dragons - feeblemind turns them into beating bags apparently, which is probably the most ridiculous use for that spell :D

Also I think I bugged Wildspire wastes quest since it's stuck in my log at "get back the son" bit although son is long dead, as well as the guy, and dragon too.
red255 Oct 12, 2018 @ 9:59am
just for the record, one of them is a demon, one of them is a devil.

if you absorb the demon into the sword it gets +5 vs devils, if you absorb the devil it gets +5 vs demons, if you absorb both it gets +5 vs both.

Calling them both devils is like getting the chinesse confused with the Japanesse. to a Prime I expect they look similiar, but they've been in the blood war for countless Eons and you really shouldn't lump them together.

Werewolves are a BG1 thing, primarily the two greater werewolf bosses in tales of the sword coast expansion. on core rules or higher, you are required to have silver weapons to strike them.

which sucks for clerics as all silver weapons are edged.

Dragon Fights in BG2. ....Honestly I just have yoshimo cover the area with traps then hostile them.

you want to get all fancy with lower resists and lower saves, fine do that.. then hit them with a chromatic orb and instantly kill them. thats fine. I generally don't bother, and instead use summons and buffs.

Improved Haste, Protection from Energy, Protection from fear. a few summons to soak some hits. and the melee warriors should be able to win thru.

A few bits of what my version of Dorn has. Currently 102 HP, AC -8, THACO -3 and a crapton of immunities. I include an overview of the basic Blackguard kit plus the stats on The Visage.

Let's see ... immune to level drain, fear, feeblemind, confusion and charm ... I also gave him the red dragon armor and the dragon shield, making him immune to fire, among other things ... Foebane is good vs both demons and devils as well as undead ... I also gave him the Brawling Hands and the +5 flame crossbow for distance attacks. With the right equipment, this bad boy rocks!

Oh, and Dorn's ToB quest is absurdly epic. You get to storm heaven (OK, the Elysian Fields) and fight not one but two silver dragons along with their solar and paladin buddies.

That Dorn quest sounds awesome. Defo rolling back to older save and redoing a bunch of stuff to get visage. Also didn't know about demons and devils, they both kinda sounded like the 2 of the same thing. What is actual difference then between demons and devils? I just thought both go under "forces of hell" tag, but apparently that's not the case?
