Maybe you refer to some multi-class/dual-class combination of a thief/mage? Then know that mages cannot cast spells if wearing armor. At most you may wear robes (or very rare pieces of enchanted armor).
and yes if you put armor on imoen in chateau irenicus it will disable her wizard spells.
If you are wondering where you can change your memorized spells, look to the action bar on the left side of the screen, you will see your spellbook. you can select which spells are memorized and able to used in combat or that day.
However, if you are casting spells from a thief, you must make sure they are not wearing any armor. Not even leather. Either naked or in a robe.
I go through the portals but cant work out how to beat the flying creatures
Make a rush for a portal. Destroy it. Run back to the last room and kill all the mephits that follow you. Then heal up and attack the next portal, etc.
There are other ways, but that's probably the easiest strategy at this point.
Also for imoen you can make her cast the armor spell so she doesnt need to wear armor and it will allow her to keep casting spells with a better armor class
