General question on romance
I have played this game long and often before and also know that you can romance various NPCs. However, this seems to never have happened during my plyathroughs. Did I blotch it or is it possible that I simply oversaw the romance? How do I know this is happening?

The romances happen through conversations started by certain companions. If you make the wrong choice in one of these conversations, you can cut the romance off at the knees. And of course, if you don't have any romanceable companions in your party, you won't have a romance.

Without mods, male PCs can romance Aerie, Jaheira, Viconia, Dorn, and Neera. Female PCs can romance Anomen, Dorn, Hexxat, and Rasaad. Race restrictions apply to some of these (Viconia won't romance elves, for example).

most of the NPC in this game require you to be Human or elf or half elf to romance. least the females.

Normally you'll be in a Romance with jahiera unless you outright make fun of her dead husband leaving the chateau irenicus, making it difficult to romance anyone else.
I believe any of them will romance a halfling as well. Aerie will romance a gnome (which is kind of weird what with Quayle being her mentor/"uncle"). Viccy will romance a half-orc.

While the romances will start, it will take several "Love Talks" before one of them will progress to the "commited" state. You can choose whomever you wish without issue.

As other posters explained to you, in addition to gender and race requirements, there are certain conversations you need to have with romanceable companions for the romance to happen. Be aware the info I'm about to dump on you is a spoiler orgy. Read at your own discretion.

Also, the old fashion gamefaqs romance guide is still very accurate and highly recommended: https://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/258273-baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/faqs/12164

There are 5 females that you can romance (Jaheira, Viconia, Aerie, Hexxat, and Neera), and there are three males (Anomen, Dorn, and Rassad), and all romances follow the same rules; don't try to have more than one romance active, don't give the wrong answers during dialog. Here's the basic info:

Viconia: Will romance a male protagonist if he is Human, Half-elf or Halfling. She will NOT romance you if you are an elf. The Drow don't like Elves. I know it sucks, and, in fact, it's actually short sighted, since a rule breaking romance would have been more interesting, but sadly it's how it is. Half-Orcs and Dwaves are also out of luck.

Some people say Alignment is important. Well, it simply isn't. What is important is your party's reputation. If it hits 18 Viconia will leave the party, and if you had a romance active, it's pretty much over. In addiction, Viconia wants to you be mix of an arrogant punk and a sensible supportive would be boyfriend, and you will have to figure out when to be which. I think she's the hardest romance so far. At the end of the romance part in SoA she will dump you, but stay in your party if you played your cards right. Then in ToB, she will resume her romance with you to complete the story chain. There is a fight involved that you will need to clear out in SoA. I strongly recommend that you read the gamefaqs guide if you want to do Viconia, since it's so easy to screw it up.

Aerie: Can be romanced if the protagonist is a male Human, Elf, Half-elf, Halfling or Gnome. And will leave the party, thus ending the romance, if the party's reputation drops below 2. Also, don't keep companions that may run into trouble with Aerie, such as that idiot Korgan who will very likely attack her or drive her off. Hexxat, Edwin, and an evil Anomen (if you let him become evil) will also cause problems.

Now the trick with her is to be nice, encouraging, and supportive. She's a very sweet girl who has had a rough life, and it's quite traumatized by it. So been nice to her shouldn't be too difficult. The most irritaring thing to watch out for is when you reach the point in the romance in which she will offer to go to bed with you. You MUST decline that offer, politely and sincerely. If you accept it, she will feel guilty and dump you thus eliminating what would happen in ToB with her romance. If you screw it, you will get an option to stay in the friend zone, though they might as well give you the chance to change your name to "Sir Jorah" LOL!

Jaheira: One of my favorite ones. She can be romanced if the protagonist is male and a Human, Half-elf, Elf or Halfling. Will leave the party if the reputation drops below 1. Her romance quest is filled with decisions you have to make that can ruin the romance quest if you are been a jerk to her, or show lack of support in any way, so when romancing Jaheira, you must understand her romance is your absolute priority. She's very cool, and her romance chain brings you in contact with some seriously cool stuff, including famous Forgotten Realms characters and more. An excellent romance for people trying romances for the 1st time.

Hexxat: One of the newer additions. She only romances her fellow females and she doesn't care about race, or even alignments. A pretty straight forward romance.

Neera: Same as Hexxat but heterosexual and good aligned.

Anomen: can be romanced if your protagonist is female, and a Human, Elf or Half-elf. A good aligned Anomen will leave the party if the party's reputation drops to 1 (if he hasn't passed his test yet), and 2 if he did.

Dorn and Rasaad: they don't really care about gender or race. Straight forward romances to say the least.

ok thanks, guys. I know most of the mechanics of the romances, the problem is just that I don't know that I am in fact in a romance with somebody. Do you get a note in the character screen, or do they say they love you or something? In other games it is quite obvious, such as Witcher or Skyrim, where you have explicit scenes and dialogues.

It's pretty obvious when you're romancing someone. They start having personal conversations with you that are 3 to 8 layers deep. If you have two romancable toons in your party and they both are getting lovey dovey, a point will come up where you have to pick one, and let the other possibly leave your group. Better to pick one, and shut the other one down.

You can put C:GetGlobal("CharacterRomanceActive","GLOBAL") into the console, where "Character" is replaced with the character's name. It'll return a numerical value; 0 means the romance has not started, 1 means it has started, 2 means it has progressed to "committed," and 3 means it has ended.

For Dorn, Neera, and Rasaad, the syntax is C:GetGlobal("Character_Romance","GLOBAL").

you could also attempt to kick them from the party, if they mention 'things won't be the same between us' then you are in a romance.

I wrote It but doesnt work, console answer: The console says: [string "C:GetGLOBAL("Jaheira Creative","GLOBAL")"]:1: attempt to call method 'GetGLOBAL' (a nil value)
