What does cutting trees do?

I've been testing out v0.69 for a while now and am trying to cut trees in parks when my builders aren't doing much. Maybe it gets you more materials? I'm not sure because nothing seems to be happening. Am I doing this wrong or are other people running into the same thing?

Apparently the scavengers are the best people for cutting trees and yes, it's supposed to give you additional materials every few days

It acts like fishing or hunting, except instead of food, you get materials. It does seem to be a bit less... rewarding?

Yeah, one material every few days. Doesn't seem too rewarding, but when you considder A) They were a finite(ish) resource before and B) If you were getting more you would probably be chopping down the entire forrest, it seems fine. Especially when you have 5 scavengers who would be doing nothing else chopping wood all day.
