Tar pits impossible to get out of at times
I'm not sure if this is a design choice, but tar pits become auto-death a lot of times once you enter into them. Even if they are just a small puddle. You simply cannot jump out of them and are stuck there until you die becaue it seems that they do damage so quickly that you are in a constant knockback state and can't jump more than a cm or so off the ground.

I have died several times due to a tar pit being near my spawn point that I must jump over to get anywhere. If I don't make it (it is about as long as the distance I can jump) I may as well just reload, since I am going to die anyways due to not being able to get out of it.

I didn't even know what it was initially as it has almost a similar color to water at certain times of day so I wasn't sure where the damage was coming from at first. Then I had a bucket and saw it was tar.

The only thing I can think of is that we should ahve a longer invincibility time to allow us to get higher jumps, or that the tar pits shouldn't cause a knockback effect like they do. They shoudl function more like how other games treat you in lava imo. You can always jump in it, but you take continuous damage.

I know that you probably want tar pits to be like a quicksand and sticky somehow, but it's just not a good mechanic when you die practically every time you touch one. Especially since I accidentally touch them at times due to lack of light.

The pits dont cause knockback, but they seriously hinder the player's ability to move (it's tar!). It's true that if you find yourself in tar, you have to mine immediately to get out if you do not have 'single square steps' to get out.

The way I normally get out (and i usually do), is I put myself against the wall, and jump repeatedly until I am out. It really depends on the formation of the pit.

It's one of the planet's deadlier substances other than lava.

Perhaps it shouldn't be as difficult as it is to get through? perhaps we should connect this to the game modes and have it be easier on builder, a bit harder but not so hard on normal, and then once we add the harder modes, make it the way it is now.

This is less of a bug report, more of a suggestion for the game. I'll move this there to keep track of it properly.

I expected it was supposed to be difficult to get out of. I understand this. For some reason it just won't let us out in some of them. If it is a pit that is in sort of a "V" shape with no steps to get out we just can't jump high enough to get out.

Mining would work if the pit was small and you can drain it I guess, but there seems like there should be an easier way to get out of it.

I'm not against it being tougher to get out, but there are just times where I have been in 2-3 tile deep pits that I couldn't get out of by jumping towards a wall, or there wasn't a wall to jump against.

Now that using mining has been mentioned I will try that a bit to see how it works. Only problem there is that it will jsut spread it and not having the ability to jump out of it you just make the area bigger. EVen if I placed blocks above it to walk above it I can't even jump high enough to get onto those blocks when iin it.

Maybe jsut allow us to jump a "little" bit higher? AT least a full 1-2 blocks off the goround? Not full height, but something a little higher?

I guess I just haven't figured out an easy way out of it yet. :/

Once you have the double jump boots it becomes alot easier to jump out of tar, especially shallow pools. I also make platform bridges over the surface of all tar pits I find, although I'm not sure if this aids in getting out, It does help you to get to the other side of large pools in relative safety.

Until you fall in a hole on your platform and then are really screwed lol... I think the only time I have not been able to get out of a pit is when there was a tall wall on one side of it and a wolf howling at me at the other end..

It's a struggle as creators of a game. I mean, one the one hand, we want the game to be challenging and provide perils. On the other hand, it has to consistently be fun and not frustrate all the players.

We have different substances in the game, and they all have their own thing. If you fall in Lava, would you be frustrated that you die in it?

I think part of the solution may be to provide a scale of difficulty to the substances based on game mode. Perhaps tar is a bit easier to get out of in Normal mode, but in Hardcore is harder. We will talk about these things moving forward.

I died in a "puddle" of tar that was something like 1/4 block high. Not even higher than the characater sole...
Maybe you could just nullify the damage or the viscosity when the amount of tar is really low,

Pressing "W" while trying to escape is also recommended.

Just craft yourself some healing armor ASAP and if you fall in a tar pit don't panic, drag any medkits you have to the action bar so you can keep them handy in order to keep you alive, plant a couple torches and try to make a way out by reducing the blocks around the tar pit.
