How do I get the workbench "powered."?

I built my workbench and right clicked it and it didn't work. So I assume I need to power it using some other source of power. I researched power generator, then realized it needs the workbench to make. Then I made like 40 gas cans, then accidentally got them stored in the workbench. Now I can't get my gas cans, nor move the workbench. Anyway, anyone know how to power it? Thanks ^^

First you need to find a power socket or craft one. Then you have to connect the combinator to the socket and then the work bench to the socket using wire. The combinator acts as a generator for early game and can be used to power one machine at a time.
