One of the kinda annoying things in this game (at least until you get used to it) is some things you won't know you can make until after you build the machine that makes them. So crafting an Alloy forge will show you that you can make Steel Alloy and Osmium Alloy right away, there is at least one more alloy that unlocks a little later.
A good rule of thumb, if not a bit of a cheese is, to always build one of any new production machine as soon as you unlock it, then just dissemble until later if you don't need it now.
According to a YouTube video I found, you need to analyze gold in the Material Analyzer.
Make sure you look in your (J)ournal under crafting and at all the goals on the other tabs too, that will generally lead you down the path you need, also clicking on items under crafting you have unlocked will show what materials and machine you need to craft it. Honestly a notepad helps to LOL. I was mapping out how many nodes and machines I needed to make composite beams…it was like 3 nodes, 10 or so machines, and a warehouse to put it in…not to mention power and water. It sounds overwhelming, but for me the game just clicked at one point and I just knew what I was doing.
