Local Coop Not working

I've tried to play local coop with a few friends, but have had issues with controllers of all things. When I boot the game, controllers are not recognized, and won't allow me to navigate the menu, using a mouse to get into the local multiplayer screens, and after selecting "Gamepad" for the player 1 controller (As we are all using controllers) No one can control the screen at all. The only way to control the menu is to use the mouse. Help?
